What are peak nitrite levels?

Hi

We have a new tank and are first timers!

We are a bit confused about the conditioning process (ammonia, nitrite. Our books say that the nitrite levels will peak and should then fall away to nothing but what should they peak at.

At the moment they are at 6ppm.

Thanks

KJ

First, welcome to Reef Central.

What your nitrite peaks at varies from tank to tank. A lot of it depends on the initial bio load you put on the tank. When I started my current tank 3.5 years ago, I had a fairly high nitrite spike (8 ppm or so) because I cycled my tank with a ton of uncured live rock. Your mileage will vary.
