I use a MJ pump. I pump the water out of the tank into a 5 gal bucket, and then stick the pump in the bucket of new water and pump it into the tank. I normally have to dump in the last gal. or so after the pump isnt covered with water. Its fast, clean and works for me

What about if your water level drops low enough for corals to be exposed?

In my AP24 I use 1/4 air line and siphon out used water into a bucket (marked at the 5 gallon point). In a 5 gallon water jug I have my pre-mixed salt water which I pressurize with an air pump. Plug in the air pump and sit back and wait for about 10 minutes while it water changes. No mess, only one bucket of used water, quiet, and leaves me two free hands for beer

Rock and corals can be exposed for a few minutes...it won't hurt anything. Clams on the other hand shouldn't be uncovered. I normally take out about 3 gals from my sump and the other 2 gals from my display, so none of my stuff is ever uncovered. But when I had my 'Pod running I would have to have some rock and corals uncovered when doing a water change...nothing was ever hurt when I was done.

Like sugarfox mentioned there are some corals that should never be out of the water like clams and in my case gorgonians.

Things like zoa's, mushrooms, yuma's, even frogspawn and xenia for a few minutes never cause a problem.

Here's what I do with my 20L. I siphon about two gallons into a bucket with some clear tubing- sucking up any debris and junk on the sand/rocks. Then I just use a maxijet to pump prepared salt water back into the tank. It's easy and no mess.

Fortunately I use my sumps so the display doesn't have a lowered water level.

You could do more frequent water changes with less water throughout the week. Obviously this is a pain as well.
