Food Coloring In Tank!
is food coloring bad for fish?
there is a leak somewhere in my coast to coast overflow...the tank is full of rocks and sand and 75 gallons of water. i want to put a few drops of food coloring in the overflow with the drains closed, and see what colored water leaks out. bad for fish? thanks, tim |

I often use methelyne blue or malachite green to control parasites in fresh water. I am not sure about their safety with marine fishes but I do know that dye does permanently stain the silicone seals of the tank where the panes of glass meet.

I am just saying, but I wouldn't use methelyne or malachite in a saltwater system containing invertabrates. The stuff is made to kill protazoas aka: inverts.
I think I heard that milk would work. I don't know about regular food coloring but I personally wouldn't add it. |

Food coloring might be safe, but I would avoid letting any get into the system. What type of overflow is this? Can you post a picture or provide a link?

+1 for purple up, Great thinkn Haywood, that should do the trick, its extremely cloudy, and should point out where that leak is almost immediately, shake it up REALLY Really well, so you can get all that dissolved calcium at the bottom of the bottom towards the top, or store it upside down for a few days, so its as white as poss.

Purple up wins! (although i will try my very dark nanno culture first to see how fast it leaks--fast enough and i dont have to makea trip to the lfs...)
its a coast-to-coast internal overflow that i built/installed myself...i wasnt thinking to well when i made it 7" deep, but only about 2" front to back...very difficult to get a clean, neat edge on the silicone. my error dates back to where i drilled the holes (dead center 6" down) and then when i mismeasured the glass (6.5" tall) and all the way through installation (7" down). surprisingly, i still think i'm winning. thanks for the purple up idea! tim |
