2nd guessing my skimmer choice (Urchin), suggestions?
I see a lot of bashing of the Aqua C skimmers (Ramora and Urchin) lately. I just got an Urchin Pro with the Mag3. Choose it for it's relatively smal physical size. It'll be on a 50 breeder mxed reef leaning toward SPS. Now I am wondering if the Tunze 9005 for only 30$ more would be a better choice. It is a little smaller, uses less wattage, and is rated for nearly the same size tank. Marine Depot gives these skimmers only 2 stars so to speak and the Urchin gets 3. What are the real world thoughts on that?

i ran an Urchin Pro w/ Mag 3 on my 75 predator tank for about 6 months and it wasn't overly impressive at all, upgraded it to a Mag 5 and it did a great job then.

A friend was raving about the DAS Skimmers as well.
Dragon slayer - so you felt you needed more flow? Part of the issue I have with the Urchin is the MAg. It was real loud and that was just running without it hooked up. Additionally I hear they throw off lots of heat. Maybe relplacing the Mag with a smaller Eheim would do the trick? |

BTW, what model DAS are you speaking off for a 50 gal mixed SPS/softie/LPS tank?

with the Mag3 it either didn't skim at all or it flooded the cup with clear water there was no in-between. with the Mag5 it skimmed, Jason at Aqua-C said i just needed a gate valve on the Mag3, but i hardly see how it would skim better with less flow so i went the other way and was satisfied.

huh, yeah seems weird about using a gate valve. Anyone else with hands on experience with the Urchin Pro or the smaller Tunze skimmers?

Tunze will eat it alive, the aqua c sucks the big one. There in sump skimmers are decent, but not the remora pro or the urchin lines. There junk. But they do have great CS.

That is what I am fearing. Thought I did my homework but evidently I was wrong!

the only reason i bought the Urchin Pro was all the talk back then about how great the Remora and Remora Pro were and the Urchin and Urchin Pro were the same skimmer just an in sump version, well needless to say i wasn't pleased at all and wished i had just got another Euro-Reef, i've never had any complaints out of my ERs, (and the price of the Urchin Pro and then the upgrade pump would of been close to the same price) and i've never use a Tunze other then my Streams and Osmolator.

I have a Tunze 9010 and it is a great skimmer. I would spring for the 9010 over the 9005 becuase it is only cost a few bucks more, and it comes with the insump conversion kit (9005 doesn't have this included).

I am leaning toward the 9010 now (too bad MD charges a 10% restocking fee + I need to pay shipping again) I wonder it if ithe 9010 may be a little too powerful on a 50 gal reef. With the sump water included maybe the power will just allow me to feed a lttle more. Any thoughts on that?

The bigger the better, it will allow you to upgrade and keep the skimmer.

That is what I am hoping. My upgrade would probably be to 75 or 90.....but, do you think the 9010 would do on a 120?
