The finished product is hydrated ferric oxides which in a closed system could potentially be lethal, if you want to protect your investment, by a 99 cent plastic clamp and breath easy. TinMan

What's the active ingredient in rowaphos and phosban? Rust.
There have been some complaints of problems in tanks that use the iron oxide phosphate removers, but they almost all involve corals, not fish and are in tanks that use the products heavily. I know of no reason to worry about small amounts of rust in a FO tank. My only concern would be about what other metals may also be in the clamp.

As someone already pointed out, ferric oxide is commonly used in reefs, and generally in the most demanding of reefs.
That aside, we are not discussing pure iron oxide and rusting metal clamps are just ugly. Buy some palstic ones and remove it. But It is far from being as dire of a situation as some copper making its way into the tank, and quite possibly harmless. |

There is an article in last months FAMA or maybe the issue just before that where they discuss the results of having metal parts (like tools, clamps...) rust in the tanks water. It's just not good...
I'll find the article tonight and reference the content.
