My Stocking list for my new 180 FOWLR

3 months ago I added 180lbs of live rock, and 150 lbs of live sand. The tank has a 40 gallon sump and about 10X turnover for flow and an ASMG3 for skimming. I decided to get aggresive fish that I can watch grow out over time so here is the list so far. ( I do not plan on keeping them there when they near there full grown size...or when real aggression sets in, so far everything is perfect)

1 have been adding the fish over the last 1.5 months one at a time save that of the angels

1.5 inch clown trigger
2 inch Flame Angel
2.5 inch Annularius Angel
3 inch Navarachus Angel
4 inch Emperor Angel
4 inch White Cheek Tang
2.5 inch Stars and Stripes Puffer
3 Inch Sand Sifting Goby
10 inch snow flake eel

100 blue leg hermits
100 snails
...maybe less now that the puffer and clown trigger noticed how tasty they are...

I was thinking about adding a small fuzzy dwarf lion fish, an austrailian harlieqin tusk and possibly a mappa puffer and then calling it a day...is this over kill for stocking???

As of now no its not but the puffer and emperor angel and clown trigger will grow fast. I would cross the lion out cause the of the other fish will try to nip at the fins of the lion or it will be to slow at eating time.

I'd say yes, overstocked. Four angels, a trigger, puffer tang and eel, all messy eaters, especially when they get bigger. Are you planning on upgrading? The tusk would fit nicely into your group, add good color, but the puffer will get big and cause problems, the lion will get picked on like sweetpea said. Are you planning on upgrading?

wasn't really planning on upgrading for at least 5 years...the 300 reef will eventually be a FOWLR when I do a bigger reef. I wasn't planning on keeping all these fish more than 1 to 2 years in this tank....I know they grow fast, and plan on doing a 50 gallon water change every 2 weeks...As they outgrow the tank, I have someone that will take them. The puffer defianately will not stay more than one year as I know they get really big. The Clown Trigger will stay as long as he doesn't get to aggressive or to big. the Emporer angel same as well...i don't know who fast they grow...but I know an 15 inch angel wouldn't be happy in a 180...thats why I am buying them all under 4 inches...to watch them grow and then send the ones that get to big to bigger and better homes

You are overstocked right now - I wouldn't add any more fish unless you take some out. I know these fish are small now, but I question whether your tank will be able to support the load once they get some size on them. I'm not sure if this list will be viable for 5 years in a 180. I think you may see some aggression coming out in time. Keep us updated, it will be interesting to see how things progress.

That trigger will grow into a mighty fish, you need to keep an eye on him in case he decides to go nuts.

so far the fish are all doing well. I will monitor aggression, size, and tank paramaters and adjust the stocking level accordingly. I don't plan on keeping this load 5 years out...those fish will all have tripled in size by then...but I was more curious for about a 1 year time frame seeing as the biggest fish is less than 5 inches how much else could be added.
I may just be happy with the list as of right now.
