What should I say?

Should I or should I not?

My friends have a son that is the same age as ours and an older son that has been working with hubby off & on for a few years.

The older son wants to borrow my car to take to the PROM. He is very responsible and will be graduating with a double diploma this year. Not in any way a drinker or anything else. Has a paid full scholorship and turned it down to go the the Navel Academy.

I am torn wether or not to let him use it fo rthe night or not. My first response was NO! I have been thinking about it and I still don't know if it is a good idea. Just so you know, the car isn't my concern. I'm afraid that any kid that gets a sports car not matter how responsible MAY not be able to resist the urge to have a little fun. My main concern is his safety.

He really wants to take a nice car, convertable preferably, but to rent one it will be $400 for the weekend. Mine would be free.

So I ask the stable minded people of the lounge.......Do I let him borrow the 350Z or not?

A kid in a 350Z! No! Your better off spending 400$ to rent a car for him as his present.

tell him its got a onstar/lowjack type thing that keeps track of the car and can be probed about things like speed and rpm....

otherwise.... as a former enlisted navy type i say screw em... he'll get enough perks once he is done with the acadamy...

Noooo!! Prom makes good kids do stupid things. And there will be a lot of drinking and driving other kids coming and going from the same place.

And he might get it on in the car. Do you want to picture that when he returns the keys with a smirk on his face?

Unless you get a signed contract from his parents that they'll be liable, I say no. Sorry getting out around other kids, girls can make the most responsible kid stupid.

I really want to give hime the chance Salty3.

All the above reasons are the same ones I keep coming up with also. I am not in any way worried about him drinking & driving but all the others that might be. Although to enter the Prom each must sign a no drinking contract from what I hear.

Well it's sometimes everyone else you have to worry about. What do his parents say about it?
And is he insured under their insurance? That's important.

Doesn't matter if he has his own insurance or his parents have insurance. Also doesn't matter if they sign a form saying they're liable. If he's in an accidnet and is sued the DRIVER and the OWNER of the car gets sued.

I'd say sorry, no way.

In that case, how much money do you have? I have to say no Aliie, the risk may be too high.

We are going to his parents tomorrow about this. He is insured with an active policy. I want to know what his parent have tosay about this before I make up my mind. I am still with the majority here. I guess I am hoping that they are against it just to make saying no easier.

Not that much money to not care.

I gotta go with Carrie on this. She is absolutely right. As a lawyer I say the exposure to liability is ridiculous. As a father I say that if anything happened like the worst - an accident in which someone is killed - you would never forgive yourself. As a guy, I went to a lot of proms Aliie. None of them were tame. You don't want to trust anything of value to an 18 year old guy full of more testosterone than a person should be allowed to have. Add alcohol and girls in prom gowns and you've got a time bomb on your hands.

I actually have to vote for the kid here... But then again, I don't know him so mine shouldn't count.

If you know this guy, know what group of friends he hangs out with (or the hubby does if they work together?) and know that he's one of those "good kids" that just doesn't have an interest in the wacky things most kids do or is even on the fence about trying anything than he's probably trustworthy and more likely to get hit BY a wreckless driver than be one.

My friends and I were really geeky.. we had a party at my friends house with pool and spent our party money on decorations and favors rather than booze.. we were all sober, played video games, swam, played weird stupid games like charades and just were innocent kids..

I'm sure there were a few making out in a car here or there but .. i mean, thats more like what kids normally do and isnt so bad as driving drunk, right?

Actually with that in mind I'd say yes, have the car - get the parents to agree yada contract or whatever yada - with free detailing when the car is returned tee-hee

There are actually some responsible 17\18 year olds out there.. just have to look for them

You are right about that Debi.......the thing is I am usually the one who has to put her foot down and say no. I am really good at it to.

Nice to see you put your opinion in here for me Batguano.
Funny that you say never to trust an 18 yr old with anything of value........the car really isn't an issue in this at all. I would even care if the car was gone or never seen again. You are also correct in the fact that I would never forgive myself if something happen because I let him use the car.

Ummmm, no I'm not renting him a car. I check around and most of the really nice cars to rent do run $375-430 for the weekend.

Chrisstie, he is just that good kind of kid too so thanks for your imput on his behalf also.

Forgot the normal disclaimer: I am not an attorney (thank god) but I did stay at a Holiday Inn once or twice.

Aliie, it's your choice, but I would be really uncomfortable about loaning the kid the car. He might be a great kid and very responsible, but there are a lot of other kids on the road on Prom Night that are not. Teenaged drivers just don't have the experience and reactions to be good defensive drivers - my niece crashed her car while being distracted when changing the CD in her car stereo.

I contributed $100 to my son's prom night so he could rent a limo with his friends to be escorted there and back. They had a great time, the parents all worried much less, and the kids all got back safe and sound. Best $100 bucks I ever spent, IMO!!!!!

Ask your insurance company, and find out if the kid is insured, and for what---whether he's covered while driving some other car.

I'm a responsible adult

and I can honestly say you shouldn't trust me in your car!!
A 350Z is not a car for a kid to drive to a Prom
