Does Temperature Affect Limewater?

My question is: If I leave my holding container filled with limewater (about 40 G) outside (I live in Tampa, FL) do I have to worry about it getting to hot or cold? I am just using it to hold the limewater so when I take it out to be added to my tank I will make sure the temp adjusts.

Thanks,

Mike

I keep mine in my garage, where it probably gets down in the 40's-50's...still holds up

The coldest it gets here is about 35F and that is only for a little bit at night a couple time a year. Most winter nights it stays in the 40's. Gotta love Florida!

In the summer time it can get really hot at about 100F. However, this is going to be on my porch in the shade so it may not get that hot but it will have a lid on it.

Temperature can affect solubility of most soluble compounds, but I am not sure that the temperature ranges we are talking about here really makes a huge difference for what we are interested in. I think the bigger question is the oxygen solubility - if it gets too hot there will be less oxygen in the water. On a hot florida day, outside I bet your water could easily hit 90 or hotter in a colored tub, which can actually cut down the solubility of oxygen by as much as 30%. You might consider letting it rest for several hours and let it cool down or warm up to let the oxygen redissolve before adding it to the tank.

I don't know what the solubility curve for calcium looks like though, maybe randy could tell you more.

Calcium hydroxide is actually a little more soluble in cool water than warmer water, so there is no concern with it getting cold, at least until it freezes. The losses when it is hot are not that critical. Not nearly as much as a dissolved gas.
