my fuges have never had any critters in there. no sand. no rubble. just chaeto macroalgae.

but, if you wanted to...perhaps some snails and hermit crabs if you have rubble rock in there. i think anything more than that may eat the goodies you are wanting to grow out...eg pods and maybe the macroalgae. fish in my fuge would need to hold on with 120x+ turnover in my bucket fuges!!!

it is also a great place to conceal the sunken pirate ship you always wanted but know would be ribbed by fellow reefers when they inevitably drop by!!!

It makes sense to me that predatory livestock should be excluded from a refugium if possible. They will feed off of the algae, plankton and other micro-organisms that you would want for your main livestock. I have been reading up on this subject a bit lately and it seems to me that a the inhabitants(sand, rubble and plants)in a fuge should remain undisturbed with only gentle water flow allowing for as natural growing an environment as possible. I suspect there would be a lot of stuff growing in such a stagnant tank, though. I am going to convert my old 100g into a fuge and just let it sit for a year or more and see what happens.

I have one large hermit living in my sump. He was a snail killer no matter how many large empty shells were in the tank. No rock, or substrate, just macro algae. He eats any uneaten food that ends up down there and seems to be doing just fine. He can't really eat the algae or anything contained in it because it tumbles in the middle of the water and crabs can't swim, so he couldn't reach it if he wanted to.

it 'depends' on what you want a fuge to be. pod growth? macro growth? estuary conditions?

i have been using extremely high flow fuges for chaeto macro growth for years with excellent results (if growing chaeto like mad is your goal).

pod growth hindered? when i trim my chaeto...i pull it apart and shake the bejeebers out of it. out comes flying tons and tons and tons of pods etc...it's lke a snow storm!

in my experience, i found slow flow fuges to not elicit fast chaeto growth. additionally, the macro growth was slow and the strands were always brittle. the biggest drawback was that my slow flow fuges became ultra icky settling chambers...esp when i put sand and rubble in there.

the down side of a bucket fuge? it is one of the fugliest pieces of equipment you will have. BUT, for me, the thing is located in the garage and my equipment is not for aesthetic reasons. i prefer my equipment to be functional above all...and if it is pretty...hey, that's a bonus!

Yes, I think how you manage your fuge depends on your goal. Well stated. Like the display tank, you can't have it all. What is not mentioned much when it comes to fuges is that other than growing algae it can can and often is used as a denitrification chamber?
