Tunze 6100 or a 6200.
Get ya some Cerith snails 4+ per gallon. They keep the sand stirred, and will come out when you feed.

I have a sand-sifting star that just stays in the sand (I know, hard to believe with that name). I would say cut the number of ceriths in half, and that would be a good number...

Try a Twinspot Goby, they are great little sifters that do not grab a mouthful and then hover over your rock and corals like other sifting gobies. I have a pair in my 180 and the sand stays nice and white due to their efforts, with a lil help from ceriths and a fighting Conch. My Tangs actually get more sand blowing around then the gobies when they zoom away after food! The Twinspots will just slowly work their way around the sandbed with no muss no fuss.

I've had a sand sifting star for a year and my sand is pearly white. It's very active both day and night and never leaves the sand. I have nassarius and ceriths too but they do a poor job compared to the star.

Sand sifting stars are great for cleaning up sand. However they REALLY clean it up. What I mean is they will eat the life(pods, worms, nitrate filters, etc) out of those sands...and if you don't have enough nutrients in the sand the star will die off and your sand will be a desert. Live sand turns into dead sand.
I like conches but they do climb up the rocks every once in a while. But I think in the long run they are a little more reef safe compared to sand sifters. |

How about a shovel
My favorite were sandsifting cukes and nassarius snails.

I'm surprised no one has mentioned tiger tailed cucumbers. The best sand 'cleaners' IME.

How big do these cukes get? I'm thinking about buying one. My two conches not doing their job too well. Anyone got a pic of a cuke? I might have seen them but don't know what they were. Thanks.
