If your saying your looking for something cheap, Aquarium pharmacuticals test kits seem to go for $5-6 online. I'd start there...

ALso you can get a product called Polyfilter. You put it in your sump or filter, and if it develops a blue tinge, there is copper present. Polyfilter can remove copper from water, but not quickly enough to protect invertebrates and sandbed. If you ran polyfilter over a period of months until it got no blue color at all, it would probably have removed all copper...so a tank that's been exposed to copper is not totally hopeless, but a difficult job to clean.

API kits are cheap and pretty easy to use but personally I don't use them any more for important parameters. Things like mag or cal don't matter much 20 ppm either way.
But things like copper, phos, ammonia etc are critical. I think it's better not to try to save money on the really important kits.
The salifert or La Motte kits might be dearer, but how much is the livestock in your tank worth?
