It's official, I'm the laziest reefer on the planet.
I started reefing 10 years ago. I was obsessed at first. My tank became so stable I started getting very lazy. I can't even remember the last time I did a water change. Maybe 10 months ago? My remora skimmer doesn't even really skim any more, I have no Idea why. I wan't my corals to stop growing because I'm sick of trying to relocat everything. I would love to say my reef is the priority in my life but it's just not now. Anyone near Bakersfield, I'll give you some shrooms and frags. My tank is littereally overloaded.

I like the minimalist approach. Do you topoff water manually? The only reason I like having a sump under mine is for the auto topoff and so I can hide heaters in it. I've tried a Remora and an ASM Mini on my tank, neither one has skimmed efficiently, yet nitrates are always under 0.5ppm, despite pretty heavy feeding and infrequent water changes (once every 2-3 months). Yesterday I unplugged my skimmer pump. I'm going to see if anything changes (seriously doubt it), then probably sell the skimmer locally.
I believe I owe my low nitrates to my HoB refugium loaded with chaetomorpha. |

LMAO
We got RC members who treat their tanks with such a high degree of detail as to water chemistry and husbandry that it would make a marine biologist blush...or RC members who try harder then hell to make their tanks work to no avail...and then this. God this is too funny!

quick question...if your not interested in the hobby, maintaining your aquarium, and/or your inhabitants that live in the aquarium, why not just sell it?

Great looking shrooms. You obviously are maintaining your tank to some degree. Where is Bakersfield?

I didn't say I hate my tank, I've just lost interest in being married to it. Bakersfield is 1.75 hrs north of LA. I'd ship them but I'm too lazy . lol I'll probably suck it up one day and do a tank cleanup. My coral on the Right side of the tank belongs in the wild.
The amount of money I spent on my tank this year: $19.00 on a light bulb that went out and I was upset that I had to fork over money for that. lol |

From what I can see you only have frogspawns, mushrooms, and leathers. Plus a few fish here and there. I would say that its nearly impossible to kill such hardy corals. A good light and some water circulation is all that is needed to keep it going. That and toping off.
Anyways, nice full reef. Giant corals are awesome! |

In my opinion, if you spend more time "working" on your tank than sitting and watching it, whats the point? I take the very minimal approach too and it works well for me. I have barely spent any money on equipment, just spend it all on livestock. |

In my 90, that would be a huge loss over 2 weeks and a large change in salinity. I assume your hood is a tight cover? Do you run any fans? Thanks

I'm just too lazy to go get the foam containers, pack them up, drive down to the UPS store. It's not the money.
Does anyone know why a remora wouldn't skim anymore other than they suck? Is the pump maybe not flowing enough anymore. I should call my local water company and see if I can get a water data sheet. I havn't added calcium, or any other additive. Top off - Because I let it go down 5-10 gallons before I finally decide to top it off. When the pumps start sticking out of the water I top it off. I've had those corals at the top sticking out of the water. They don't like it so much but they get by. My tank is open. I should probably get top but I think the top offs I do are putting the stuff needed in my tank. |

Looks fantastic! Just like we did it back in the old days :-)
Even down to the raw wood. Keep it going forever.

The remora could have some blockage somewhere if you haven't cleaned it much. I'd tear it apart and clean it out.

Im just messing around, dont really mean it... Did you ever dose your tank with iodine, trace elements, stontinum etc?

Cool...
Well, skimmers need to be cleaned, so that probably explains it's lack of skimming. Anyways, sweet tank, shows you can still have a nice tank on the cheap with little maintenance if you stick to bulletproof begginer corals. Many people try more difficult livestock and then lose interest like you, and end up with a crash and losing the tank all together it seems. Last edited by HBtank; 07/24/2007 at 07:09 PM. |

I had a tank like this once and LOVED it.
The 3S's: Sumps, Skimmers, and SPS can steal the enjoyment from the hobby. This tank should be the paradigm 90% should follow. |

nice tank, junkyard.
i have to say that unfinished pine stand and canopy don't look ten years old. they don't even look ten months old. and you can't be that lazy to not be raising giant dust bunnies where your sump oughta be! my old remora would work like new after a nice hour skimming bucket full of vinegar and water solution. that may be an evening worth of maintenance that would at least make it worth running the powerhead feeding it.

I said I've been in the reef keeping hobby gor 10 years. My first tank was a 44 tall. When I moved to my new house 5 years ago I transfered it all to this tank.
I might try that skimmer trick. I've cleaned it with the bristle brush but it doesn't do much. |
