A sad day for reefkeeping...

I'm sorry to say but my long time friend and coral pioneer Greg Schiemer lost his battle with cancer this morning at the age of 48.
Greg spoke at LIRA on several occasions and for those of you who knew Greg, you'll recognize what a loss this is.

For those of you who didn't know him, but maintain reef tanks today, in a way you do know him because a lot of his work and love for the hobby is the reason we are so successful today with reef keeping.

My tank at Atlantis is as nice as it is because of my friendship with Greg.

More details regarding the wake and services can be found at:

http://obit.hawthornefuneralhome.com...rnefuneralhome

There is a guest book there as well, so even if you didn't know Greg but have a reef tank, it would be nice to drop his family a note.

Wow. I don't know what to say. Greg always went out of his way to answer questions and give me advice. I know he did the same for many others as well. My deepest condolences go out to his loved ones. He will be missed greatly.

This is terrible.

Greg was always a regular face at the old BAS meetings and I remember all of his incredible knowledge and his generosity with the club.

May he rest in peace.

Wow, I had no idea he was even sick. We've met quite a few times, and Greg was always very personable. Truly a sad day for the reefkeeping community. Greg, you will be missed.

Thank you, Joe, for informing us and allowing our reef community to show Greg's family our appreciation for his pioneering efforts, considerable and considerate mentoring... and his great accomplishments.

I am so sorry to read of this loss.

With prayers for Greg, his family and friends.

That was Greg... he didn't want anyone to know. He took such great pride in this hobby, and always had an open, unbiased approach to things, and that was to our great benefit.

We are looking to combine our July meeting into a possible frag swap with some other clubs, and dedicate the meeting in his honor. I spoke with Greg's wife Lydia and of course their hospital bills are huge, so we'll be trying to organize getting his equipment to the meeting, with all proceeds going to a college fund for Greg's two children. I'll also be bringing lots of frags, and all those proceeds will go their family as well. If others would like to join the cause, the more the merrier.

I'll also be offering up a "Snorkel in the Atlantis Reef Tank" raffle, the winner gets to join me in a snorkel tour of the tank.

Any other ideas, suggestions will be appreciated as it will be time to remember and celebrate Greg's life.
