Tyree Torch - it's awesome even if it's not

I bought this Torch today at my lfs. The guy (who is awesome) told me it was a Tyree Torch that he special ordered to the store with some other exotics. What do you guys think? Is there such a thing as a Tyree Torch? I don't really mind that much... the name doesn't matter to me. It's just when I frag it later on since it's in my 10 gallon tank, I don't want to publicize that I am trading a Tyree coral if I am not. I figure you lps freaks may know...

If I was you I would be slightly mad at your LFS guy. I see lots of stores that know nothing about the whole Tyree thing and they try to put his name on corals that aren't even remotely close to something he sells. Tyree doesn't have a torch coral. At least not in the normal use of the common name. I hope they aren't selling other corals as Tyree corals.

Steve Tyree, is a renowned aquarist noted for corals of extraordinary color and rareity. Frags of Tyree corals often called LE (limited edition) sell at a premium and often have multi year waiting list.

Mr .Tyree is a person who travels around collecting corals that are usually a beautiful colour morph and then propigates them in his own system. He then will auction a piece off to establish a base price for the frags and then sells them on a monthly/bi monthly or even longer schedule. People get on these list which can be 5 years long already. Essentially Steve sorts through corals and finds some real nice ones. As for the whole lineage thing, many people try and use the name to demand an inflated price for their frags (not suggesting this is what is going on here). The price of a frag can easily double if it has the "Tyree" name with it. People are beginning to really wise up and demand a credible evidence of lineage back to Steve Tyree's tanks before they shell out the big bucks.

Cheers,

Scott

Scythanith-

Very true. I pay for a coral based on how much I like it regardless of what name is attached. I already was going to buy this coral at the price he quoted and then he added that he ordered it online as a Tyree exotic coral. I just don't want to go around fragging it with a Tyree name if it's not when it grows too large for my 10 gallon.

Looks like it's not a Tyree... so biggie. Thanks for the input everyone.

I love torches!

Jason

How do you actually prove linage anyway? Do people actually go through the tree of hands the frag went through to see if its linage is true?

How about some of the corals I bought from Tyree at the Reef a Palooza? He doesn't know who I am. Even though I met him and talked to him for a while. I bet if he saw me he wouldn't remember what I bought, even my name. He probably wouldn't even recognize me. lol.

Nice coral BTW.

But you know you bought them directly from him. And if your an honest person and the people you are selling frags to believe you than that's all a person can do. Allthough constructing a tree to pass along would be cool.

My tree of linage is only as honest as the person I got it from. Like I recently bought a Watermelon frag from someone on RC, who said he got it from Frag Farmer. If he lied to me, then I'd be lying to everyone else I fragged and sold it to. But since I knew Eric he confirmed it.
