need a vets 2 cents
alright, i recently switched to a traveling vet who is a friend of the family and used by my parents. he's a nice guy and his prices are cheaper than the other vet i used, but i want to hear what you think of what he told me. he only sold me 9 months of heartworm preventative, saying it was unneccessary from Dec-March, too cold for the worms. is this true? i'd rather be overly cautious and give it to my dogs year round, even though it costs more. it's frickin freezing out there right now, and my dad pulled a tick off mom's min schnauzer 2 days ago. if they're still kickin', why not the heartworm? both my dogs have had their heart meds for this month, but we don't have any for next month. is there anywhere online where i can find it cheaper? i've been using the iverhart plus line. Thanks!

I give year round.
The medicine works in arrears which mean when you give it to them on Dec. 1, it kills anything prior to that, not after.

I thought the vector/ carrier of heartworms was the mosquito. Can ticks and or fleas also transmit them?

I've always loved living where you don't have to worry about heartworm.

The microfilariae heartworm stage acquired by the mosquito from feeding on an infested dog has to mature inside the mosquito for it to be able to infect another animal. This maturation is temperature dependent and does not occur below 57 F (14 C). Thus, once the temperature is consistently below 57 F, the larvae cannot develop and mosquitoes cannot transmit the heartworms.
It may be safer to give the preventative monthly year round to keep up with routine or in case of unusually warm days. The Iverheart Plus has the added benefit of treating some intestinal parasites. There are topical products that can control ticks if they are an issue.
