The old version was:

2 x54 watt ATI Aquablue Special
2 x54 watt ATI Blue plus
3 x80 watt ATI Aquablue Special
3 x80 watt ATI Blue plus

Makes 696 watts

And now:

2 x54 watt ATI Aquablue Special
2 x54 watt ATI Blue plus
4 x80 watt ATI Aquablue Special
4 x80 watt ATI Blue plus

Makes 856 watts

So Iwan, what do you think is the major factor in the success of your reef tank, the T-5 lighting, or the bacteria food?

Iwan,

Thank you for posting such an interesting perpective on "Korallen Farben" on your personal site! It's one of the most educational outlines of the differences between chemical and biological processes behind coloration that I have seen --und es macht mir traurig, daß ich so viel Deutsch vergessen hatte. Ich wolle mein Deutsch studieren jetzt!!!

Hmm, good call...

"Berichte" --> "Wie Korallen zu ihren Farben kommen" (auf Englisch, How coral come about their colors.)

Authored by Iwan September 2005. Good stuff.

One quick thought, since Iwan has copyrighted this document, it's probably best this thread gets his permission before cutting and pasting, or posting translations.

Hello

I like to answer your questions

Stone corals need some prerequisites for the development of a good coloring:

- good light quality (good spectrum/large light quantity)
- no surplus nutrients
- a supply with the needed elements
- enough food
- the genetic prerequisite to the colorfulness

Many thanks.

I am pleased that the article opens the sensibility to the needs of the corals.

In my article I make the following central statements :

The corals have the ability of the color production by the production of chromoproteine (pocciloporine)

We can distinguish striking and flourescent pocciloporine

The corals use the energy for the color production only when they are fed sufficiently.

The light quality is one of the elementary factors for the production of pigments.

Not all corals have the genetic competence for the color formation

A balanced nutrient availability is important.

The colorfulness depends on the following factors:

The quality of the incident light: Light quantity and radiation spectrum

The available nutrients in the water. A high nutrient occurrence causes an increase of the zooxanthels and therefore a covering of the colors

The diet condition of the corals: Corals which suffer from a diet limitation don't use the available energy for the production of pigments

The genetic competence for the color formation. If the genetic competence is missing, you cannot get colored corals. Even under optimal conditions

So what are you actually feeding the corals?

I provide my corals with the following additions with energy:

phytoplancton
amino acid
"Pohl's Coral Vitalizer ", a liquid coral food

beautiful!

What is the benefit of T5 bulbs over MH? Is the power consumption less as well?

Very very nice

This may sound like a noob question, which I am, but why do you switch from MH to T5? Do you think that T5 gives you better color and growth for your corals than MH?

thanks!

Do you (or anyone) know what products in the US I can get that are they same as those items above. I have t5's, too, but my tank doesn't look anything like that! But I want it to!

I'm guessing DT's could be the phytoplankton. What other additives can I use to give me the AA and liquid coral food?

Well, I'm not sure if you can amino acid directly, but SeaChem's Reef Plus contains amino acid as one of its main ingredient. ReefPlus also used in GARF's bullet-proof system as well.
