Like I said, I know better than to use any power tools or even aggressive sanding to any species veneer. My Sandvik scraper has served me well over the years. Thanks for the info on Andaman. I know the Padauk I have and have used is of African origin.

Not you the company that cut the veneer. I assumed you were talking about commercial cut veneers.

Quick update. Didnt get done what I probably should have over the long weekend. The stand is still in pieces but everything is cut and ready to be shaped. Last panel is done in the bag and I got a start on the sump lay up. This is a slow process since the sump cant go into the bag without being crushed. I should have left the sump enclosed and installed a air fitting so it could go into the press, Oh well life goes on. I pulled another stupid move and put a stack of 100 or so clamps on the router side of the table saw and came out this morning to the saw laying on its side and my incra fence rails bent. I really should put some legs on the thing, this is the third time.

Here is a little more. I'm spending time shaping and putting it all together. Still need to finish covering the sump. I did manage to get the sump recessed into one of the sides, sort of like a huge mortise.

These are the blow out fans for the light fixture. They will be controlled by a thermostat within the fixture above the ballast.

These are the fans that will be counter sunk into the back of the tank and blow over the water. There will be two of them so 8 fans total. These will be controlled by the ranco oposite the heat.

Your link is dead. I assume it was to one of the temp controlled expensive ones.

I will be using a ranco that is different than most. Mine has a linear 1-10v linear voltage output that will be tied to a fan speed controller. This will proportionally control the speed of the 110v fans based on actual tank temp as determined by the single ranco controller.

Not really. The db rating are sort of misleading. I'm using them only because they are the ones my brother uses in his recording studio. I cant hear them when he has them running so I think they will be fine for me.

This is how its getting wired. This is the back of the stand with 12g wire for the halides and cooling fans.

Don, I know it's part of your job, but I have to say, your attention to detail is impressive. I think that's where I fall short sometimes. Are you going to make that permanent or keep it removable in case you need to redo wiring at some point in the future?

Thank you. Nope its never comming out, its in there with plastic resin adhesive. Since these are for the halides and fans I dont think they will ever need anything different. Just 12g with 120vac.

Can't wait until we see the finished product......that is some serious wood working skills you have there Don. Any tips on how you apply your finish/clear coat? What do you use? I've used water based poly before and always had problems with bubbles when brushing them on. I heard rub on varnish is almost idiot proof....any opinions on this?

I spray with a turbine hvlp, unless I'm doing a hand rubbed diy recipe. This will be sprayed with deft, not the waterbase version.
A good finish tip I guess would be to use the 65/65 rule. Eliminates alot of problems like blushing and fisheye.
Always use sanding sealer of some sort. I like plain old fashioned shellac flakes.

Finish at 65+ degrees with less than 65% reletive humidity.
or
If its impossible to get 65 degrees then make sure the dew point is 20 degrees or more less than ambient.

Don-

This is by far the nicest looking project I've seen in a while. You definitely have some impressive skills there.

About your ATO though:
Is it a special type of resin used for potting like that? Also, will this allow this unit to just be placed inside the sump, or will it "see" through the acrylic?

The potting epoxy is made for sealing pumps and such. The box is a potting box made just for this brand of epoxy so it forms a perfect bond of the two materials. The entire thing goes right in in the sump although only the lower sensor will be submerged full time. I was going to install them through the sump wall but didnt want the wiring visible and wanted the height to be adjustable if need be.
