I looked back through all of the pictures from this thread and your web site, but I don't see any that show them. My old fashioned (tar?) ballast gets way too hot to put in the cabinet but perhaps the electronic ones are ok to put in there?

Thanks,

Steve Hicks
Steve: The ballasts are mounted under the livingroom floor beneath the tank and accessed from the basement. All I did was attach the ballasts to a sheet of plywood and then attach the plywood to the floor joists in the basment in a location right beneath the tank. The power and output cables pass up through the interface hole in the floor to the electrical receptacle panel in the stand and the canopy on top of the tank. This way their heat (as well as any noise they might produce) does not affect the tank environment at all.

HTH!

I love following ur set up......this has been one of the best rides yet!!!!

I give you kudos for such organization and concern......it speaks volumes for the keeper you must be!!!!!!! beautiful and strong work.

I was also wondering something......NOT that I want to copy you, I wouldn't dare or even try something like that!!! That's just not my handle all that DIY work!! hahahah Poor me!

I did visit the american DJ site, because one thing I do love best is that you can plug multiple units in........and have them easily located and the switch of a button it can be taken care of and so on.......

I'll admit they had so manny items which said they have eight, three, and five outlets and so on.......I got way too confused.....

Can you tell us which model you used.........and maybe if you know, which model they have has the most outlest in one unit/piece?

Losing every bit of your up and coming ocean......this will be amazing!!!!!!!!!

wow, I just spent over an hour here at work reading this post! Doug your tank is awsome! I love the setup. Very organized! And that electrical work you did! Wow! have you thought about becoming an electritian! Anyway...I wish you luck with you tank and keep them pictures coming. I'd love to see your tank as you progress!
Oh by the way...I think you said several post behind...I mean several post! that your wife wanted to get two clowns with a different pattern...I don't know but I have several blue chromis and I can tell them apart! I think the longer you have them the more you can distiguish them. Their like twins!

anyway....luck! and its time to go home!

Thanks a heap for all the kind words and encouragement. It has been a real priviledge to share this experience with the folks here at RC!

The picture below shows the units with the model numbers clearly written on the front left side.

Also included a shot for Steve (Trachten) showing the ballasts mounted on the basement ceiling just below the tank.

Doug,

Thanks for the picture of the ballasts. You have definitely made great use of basement access (fresh/salt water, drain to sink, ballasts, etc.).

Steve

I agree, Steve... a basement in this hobby is a real bonus! I realize not everyone lives in an area where there are basements, but having one has real benefits.

Back when we started many suggested we have a larger sump in the basement since it could be much larger and all the water noise would be far from the tank. In hindsight I wish I'd planned it that way. But, if I had I'd probably not have purchased a custom acrylic sump which means we may not have met Marc (melev). Marc, as well as many others, have been a real blessing to Cathy and me throughout all this.

Since we're planning to move in 2 years, I'll wait till the next house to move the sump to the basement.

JOHNboy,

Since you have so many double posts I thought I'd make a suggestion that might help. Due to the frequent lag here at RC it isn't unusual to hit the "Submit Reply" button after writing a post and see nothing happen. When that occurs, don’t hit the "Submit Reply" button again... just wait a couple minutes. Your first button press is already queued at RC's server but it can't perform the function till the excessive load is relieved. Sometimes I just walk away and do something else and when I return the post has been updated to the thread.

Try it and you'll see what I mean.

HTH!

Amen to that, brother. I believe patience is the most important aspect of this hobby. Success is based on sitting back and watching the tank mature, slowly!

You all are a hoot... what a blast! Thanks to all of you for being a part of this!

Everything is looking great. This has been a great help and inspiration towards my plans of a 90 gallon tank. Right now i'm on the virge of maybe getting a 135 or 125 gallon tank instead.
Or maybe i should just go straight to my 800 gallon...
