Yep, that is what it is. I was a little disapointed when I got it because I thought I was getting all wood. It is made from the same stuff Pergo Floors is made of. I've only had it for 3 months now but I do like it. The top on it in the picture I made myself. I might eventually break down and get the matching canopy and tear apart this light fixture and mount everything in it individually. If you can find one somewhere to look at do it. You can tell (if you are picky like me) that it is not real wood but it is not near as bad as the "Quaker" series by Oceanic. That series is just plain ol particle board with a sticker on it. This is hard laminate.

Thanks, I am taking my wife to look at it this weekend, a color thing. She likes both the Cherry and Maple but wants to see them in person.

I wasn't very happy at first. I really like it now. It was only the fact that I thought I was getting one thing but got another. My LFS guy ordered it in and new I wanted the cherry stand. He didn't know their new one was made of the composite and laminate. He offered to send it back but I did like the design and didn't want to wait another week or two for the other one to come in. The one time impatience in this hobby hasn't lead to disaster (at least so far) because I do like the look much better than the regular wood stands.

The fact that is wasn't real wood did make matching it with my own built canopy very difficult. The light coming out of the tank makes the stand and canopy look dark though so it is very hard to tell they don't really go together.

Which bulb you get is a crap shoot. It depends on what they have in stock at the time. People who have the 15K like it.

I got back from my LFS. They did not have the 18" URI VHO bulbs. I don't believe many places stock them. So it looks like I'll order it from Hellolights.

Side note, I finally picked up three sexy shrimp after two months of searching. They're acclimating as we speak.

Well I have an electrician at work who "hopefully" will grace my garage with his presence next Friday (mens night) His last job he was a lighting tech and says he understands all about ballast and could buuild one if he needed.

W00T!! With a little luck and a few $$ maybe I can have him disect this ballst and find the problem? Hoping for that $2.79 part....

I'll fell better once I get him here and his meters. Beer and cigars are on the house!

Well I'll certainly be interested to see what he has to say. My feeling is that it'll be more than one part and not worth changing. But you never know.

Well my stuff from Hellolights came in and I started disecting the fixture. I have now found the the ARO ballast is a little too long to fit in any of the compartments. Also the wiring on the ballast wont reach both ends of the bulbs. Tell me why you would build a VHO ballast to power a 48" 110w bulb but not have enough wire to even reach a 46.5" bulb?? This is going to take well into tomorrow so I can get more wire and figure out were I'm going to put the new ballast.

Why are you changing ballast? I can't remember. Also, do you have any pics with the new URI bulbs I'm trying to install?

BTW. I didn't get free endcaps. I got free endcap mounting pieces to make it easier to install the endcaps themselves. Right now I don't know if they will fit or not.

Rick - I know you said before that you could use the plastic splash shield but there was a little bow to it. Are you going to use it on your's?

I would think that if you have the water resistant end caps you wouldn't need the shield. It would be just like a retro kit. My concern would be the heat that close to the shield.

Wow rick, That is BLUE!!!

I'm still working on my VHO mod. I've been at it off and on all day. I've had to make quite a few trips to Lowes/HD. I started at 1:00 and am still going at 9:15. I really only have to wire the ballast to the endcaps and I'll be done. I can't find my camera so I can't take any pictures. I'll keep looking for it though.

actually my i suck at taking pictures, the URI's are plurple with a hint of blue , now the coralife bulbs i had before are actually more purple than these but they are less bright since they didnt have the reflector built in,im very happy with them, So King what kind od problems are you running into that its taken you so long, besides running around looking for wire.
