The instructions say not to rinse it. BTW, it is brown in color and does not appear to be dusty.

Phosar needs very little rinsing compared to other medias When I used both Rowa and Phosban, I had to run 2-3 gallons of water through the reactor before the dust cleared up. With Phosar it takes 1/2 - 3/4 gallons before the output water is clear.

No way! That media is small. I bought it because after talking to Randy, it fit in all the categories. I had to buy a very well designed filter bag for it though, and alot of rinsing since its extremley dusty. Dropped the media bag in a slow flow compartment in the sump.

Plus it was cheap!

It is available. I'm not sure that many of the retailers are carrying it yet.

I use Dr.Foster's Phospure......it's a GFO and the cheapest in cost. I think for the 750g container it works out to $.03 per gram (It's currently on sale)

Here is a cost comparison I did a while back on GFO's to help me decide who would give me the most bang for the buck:

This came up in the Chemistry forum and Jon Warner of Warner marine explains how Phosar works and why. It's a good read because Randy explains the chemical basis. Basically GFO is GFO, it's the same material. Phosar, because of it's design is supposed to be superior, and Jon explains why.

Check it out. Jon is the last two posts.

I'm sorry I must not have explained that well.

Yes, Phosar is GFO. It is the design of Phosar that makes it work so well/better then other GFO.

I just made the switch from Rowa to Phosar about two weeks ago. I don't really have anything to say as far as performance goes; at this point is seems to be working. I did happen to notice that it seems to fluidize much better than Rowa; the entire top of the media dances and not just a small area on the other side of the reactor.

Now all I need to do is wait until the media becomes saturated; whenever that may be.

Does the phosar HC need to be fluidized? Thanks, Tim

It would take a lot of flow to fluidize PhosAR HC. The media is very dense and weighs much more than most GFO's. I have been using it for 6 months with a maxijet 600 running wide open through a phosban reactor.

It does not need to but it is the ideal media for fluidization, denser and does not break apart as much as other medias.

I personally choose Macroalgae and water changes for my Phosphate elimination methods.
