I will be covering the bottom of my 180g, im sure a roto zip will work well in cutting the board around the overflows.

I went with the seafoam color, kinda of an off white, a little more like the color of sand

Steve

Jaredt - your tank looks great and you have lots of room for growth. I bet those SPS will look amazing in 9 months.

Daceman89 - a club member ordered starboard for his 400g tank, and due to his overflows, we had to cut it in 4 pieces, then cut out for the overflows from those pieces. It all fit perfectly, but remember they will float up until you put rock on them to hold them down. They brought the starboard to me with a blue print of the pieces, and I cut it on my tablesaw.

Or if you are installing this in a dry empty tank, you can use silicone as glue (just a few dabs) to hold it down, and run silicone along the periphery of the tank. This will keep detritus from getting under the starboard, and keep critters from getting stuck.

ok, i kinda need some help understanding this. fish poop/food and other "processes" make detritus which equals PO4(thats phosphate right?) and something else? in a DSB, PO4 is transfered to the sandbed by the bacteria. in BB, PO4 is removed via detritus by siphoning/wet skimming. is that right? besides nitrification, what other processes go on in an aquarium? supposedly denitrification happens in sandbeds?

thanks for helping i hope im not pestering you too much with my questions

D@mn, I wish I thought of that... just some black silicone on the black starboard...

Hey Bomber,

I'm treating my fish for ich in a quarantine tank with copper now. While I'm doing this for 4-5 weeks I decided to cook my rocks in my sump and drain my display (I want to fix some scratches and silicone the starboard down).

I have the 30g sump covered with trashbags and have the skimmer running on it. I decided to keep the water temp in the mid to high 90's to help get rid of any ich and speed up the process. My rock was baserock from reeferrocks but green algae grew on it from the cycle.

1) Obviously water changes are very important but what about the dunking and swishing (in my situation)?

My sump is acrylic (which I scratched up a little getting the rocks in) and I had to really stuff the rocks in there to get them to fit well. Then I had to tape up the trash bags all around the sump and removing the rocks won't be easy. If you say it will really help in my situation i will do it.

2) Also will the skimmer still perform at these high tempartures? If it stops pulling stuff is that a good sign I'm done with the process?

3) Since the process needs ammonia to get started, the green algae should be enough for the process right?

4) Lastly, will drying out the main display be enough to get rid of the ich there?

Thanks.

LOL did you get the famous double post?

That should work, except for the dunk and swish part. Mix up new water, let it age, drain the sump into a garbage can, dunk, swish and drain the rocks, then put them back in the sump with new water.
Using new water each time really speeds up the process a lot.

Skimmers don't care.

You should have more than enough ammonium/nitrite/nitrate in the rocks and air.

Drying it out will get rid of ick. But then just going fishless will do it too. Probably about the same time you get the fish out of quarantine will do it.
