OH WOW, I can't wait to try this out myself. Perhaps I'll mod my pumps one by one and see how it goes.

Awesome!

Looking forward to the pics.

I'm going to drop by Saltwater Connection next week and check out the modded pumps. From what Jayson has said the mod works amazing.

Here's some detail shots of my skimmer:

Let me know if that's what you're looking for..

I did the mod about 3 days ago. Looks like I am getting more bubbles and a loud sucking sound, but the bubbles are still just in the neck. How many days before this thing takes off? Thanks

After seeing how much air my BM250 pulls out, I got some mesh from mavgi and will be meshing my Sedra 3500.

Still waiting on a spare impeller from custom aquatic though.

1. Took out the Sedra 3500 on my RS5-2 (aka RS80).
2. Chopped off the pins
3. Drilled 6 holes
4. Precut 3 squares of mesh, with middle circles cut out.
5. Used 3 zip-ties to secure the 3 squares of mesh.
6. Trimmed off the excess.
7. Plugged it in... wouldn't start. Not looking good.
8. Trimmed off a little more.
9. OMG Meshwheel friggin rocks out my Sedra 3500!!!

I altered my Sedra 5000's with the mesh and it went from around 3 to 5 lpm up to a constant 11lpm. So in hopes to get it up the the 20 + mark I drilled out and tapped the venturi's on both to allow more air. So far I have not been able to get any better performance even with the increased air availability.

Any ideas on what else to try?

Here are 2 pics of the venturis now.

I think there may be a ceiling with the pump with stock volute and housing. That being said, have you tried putting the angle cut piece of tubing on the inside of the venturi to creat a blockage? I found that my Gen-X 4100's pulled more air with the blockage than without it...

Its the 3/8 OD X 1/4" MIP Male Adapter from Home Depot. I drilled out the 1/4" as much as possible to allow for maximum input, I would have used the 3/8 x 3/8 but I was concerned that I would have have been able to fit the 3/8 into the pump.

Will do, what ever I do though will have to fit from the outside in, because those connectors are attached with epoxy and there is NO way they are coming out.

I don't have an airflow meter but it was definitely noticeable. The chamber is filled with much denser and finer bubbles after the mod.

Thanks mavgi, for my mesh.

So I did it.

I meshed a Maxi-Jet.

I heard gasps...yeah, I know. Pretty amazing.

I made a disk from a piece of that new tupperware stuff, that really chincy plastic stuff. Cut the impellor off. Stuper glued the disk to the shaft. 2 layer mesh. Zip tied it. Lit it rip.

I had to do some shaving on the impellor shaft to get it to sit right. Its a little more complicated than modding a gen-x or sedra.

I dont have a back pack skimmer to try it out on. Its loud. Like small Ocean Runner loud.

Does make really fine bubbles.

I will try it on a skimmer tuesday.

I found I got the most air without a venturi... just a wide open pipe with the angle cut airline across it. More water/more air... which was fine with my recirc skimmer.

Was the air line shoved through a hole in the pipe like the one I posted earlier in the thread?

Maxi-MESH

Its a 1200.

The last one I poured alittle skimmate into the water I was testing the powerhead in. As you can see, it foams prettly good. I did not compare it to a regular impellor yet.

kabal2, with the correct mesh you should not have any reason to change out the mesh unless something gets into the pump and damages it.
