LP, try to choke off the air valve a bit more and see if you can get finer bubbles in the neck. Those bubbles are too big in size.

I was playing with mine last night and discovered this little trick. It also shifted the bubble column lower in the body, which permits for greater contact time.

Phyxius,

Looks like I'm just SOL on the gate valve kit. I just got an e-mail from Premium Aquatics saying that they, too, were out of stock on them. I just left it on back order for now.

You could always just get the pieces from a plumbing supply store. One of mine I bought as a kit and the other I just found the pieces myself.
Here's a pic of the ASM kit, the pieces are the same.

This is about 18 hours worth on a lightly stocked 55
If you look at the neck you can see how small and consistent the bubbles are

What exactly is the gate valve mod kit supposed to do?

It replaces the riser tube with a valve that allows for easier and more accurate levels in the skimmer.
It makes it easier to adjust for a wetter or thicker skimmate.

Your hands also don't get wet when you adjust the height of the water in the skimmer body with the wheel of the gate valve vs. pushing the riser tube up and down. But that's just a side-benefit to the fine level control that Fuzzy mentioned. The main benefit for me is that I could get the water level in the skimmer a lot higher for wetter skimmate than I could just using the riser tube.

Thanks, I was sold one w/ the skimmer, but never really grasped how it was supposed to be used.

I'm looking at buying a Euroreef 250 skimmer. And now I need your help in deciding between the RS or the RC . Do you think the RC (cheapest I can find is $ 1117.95) is worth paying twice as much as The RS ($537.95) I will be using it on a 60x24x24 150gl
I'm just starting to set up my tank so I could use the extra $$$ Else ware unless you think the RC is worth the extra $$$
Thanks - Rick

On that size tank, the RS will be fine. The performance difference is better with the RC models. But the best performance upgrade comes with using a larger skimmer than needed. An RS250 on a 150 tank is plenty of power. Spend the money elsewhere.

LP, that looks better. What did you do to get the finer foam?

The perfomance increase (10 - 20%?) does not equal the price increase (100%). The RS250 will be more than enough. Make sure it has the new (black) pinwheel.

Hey Rick,

I'm in the same boat - we are setting up our new 150 (72x18x28) this weekend.
We went with the RS250 from Premium Aquatics for $485.
I don't know if it's Ok to post a link - but here goes:

Good luck with your new tank!!

With a related question (because stupidly I found out that after I bought an RS 135 they're not designed for external sump use): how hard (or is it even possible) to modify the RS series to run externally?

Shouldn't be too hard depending on how handy you are. You would need to do a recirculation mod. You would need to drill some holes in the skimmer. You would need an extra hole for the pump, and put another uniseal in it. The intake on the bottom, the output on the top. Some extra fittings as well. You would also need to add a fitting near the top of the skimmer for a feed line. Take a look at the RC skimmers and copy how they are set up.

I think there are some threads around somewhere. You want to make your skimmer look like this:

Before:

After:

This is a larger model RC but you get the idea. You can give ER a call. They may be able to provide the parts to do the conversion, but they are just standard plumbing parts.

I am looking to purchase a new skimmer. Unfortunately I can only spend about $200. Would the extruded acrylic RS-80 be the best option for me? Would performance suffer as a result of the extruded acrylic? I currently have a coralife super skimmer 65 with both intake and return in my filter sock. would I be able to do this with the RS-80?

I know I'm clueless at some of these things, but looking at the RC picture, how does the pump get water into the skimmer; it looks like the intake is connected to the canister???

The extra fitting at the top right. On a recirc skimmer, the skimmer has a separate feed line from the overflow or a feed pump. The needle wheel pump recirculates the water in the skimmer, but does not feed it.

For external uses, you would feed the skimmer water to that top fitting. Water back to the sump from the large output. You would likely not use the downward facing elbow.

I dont see why that would be an issue. This is the $178 skimmer? How big is the tank?
