I feel your pain - I'm in the same boat Would looooooooooove a harem of them. I can almost taste it!

I know this is off topic, but since you guys are the experts on salt angels, where can I get a mated pair of flame angels?

pygmy angels aren't naturally found in pairs. they are found in harems. 1-2 males and multiple females. to get a collected pair is literally impossible. However you can try to pair them up yourself. Reefhotspot gets in pairs every now and then (RC sponsor) i think they have a pair now.

Pair is male and female. This does not mean they will spawn (which is mated pair)

I know inlandaquatics.com sells pairs and trios of cherubfish. Will a 40 gallon long with lots of live rock be enough for a trio?

I guess someone remembered my tirade a few months back about the definition of mated pairs.

I don't care if they spawn or not, I just don't want them to kill each other.

And coralite, I will read the this whole thread eventually, but can you tell me what page is the 'definition of mated pairs' on?

Centropyges will not fight as long as you have a true female/juvenile and a male. Most of the flames you see in the LFS for whatever reason(s) generally are already male. With patience & diligence one can usually eventually find a female, though . Of course if the above mentioned vendor has pairs, that would be quickest.

Hey Angel Fish

that's a beautiful pair of flames you have in you avatar. I'm in the process of ordering a trio of Cherubs from Inland. It's the only place I know that sells them that way. I was going to try a pair of cherubs and a pair of flames, but I don't know how that will work out. It's may turn out to be to costly. Anyway ever hear of someone have more than on pair, mated or not, of centropyges in their tank?

Thanks for the compliment

There are a few people around who have that. I think the issue is more of the logistics of trying to add everybody to the tank at the same time. I found a nice mate for my cherub angel, but I was afraid to add the little fish to the tank because I don't think at this point the other angels (flame pair, Herald's, Singapore) would allow it. Once your angels become well established, it can be hard to add a new angel.

Assuming your tank is big enough and well arranged maximizing grazing surface area and hiding places, etc. - those fish should probably get along fine.

I assume you've seen Jaken's flame angel harem - he has something like 5 in the same tank - pretty cool IMO!

looks like a female masked angel.... which if it is, that pic was taken a LONG time ago since none have entered the market in almost a decade...

I'd be willing to bet that the juvenile masked angel in the image is from those which were reared at the Waikiki aquarium. The last time I saw a pair of masked angels was in 2001. I was bagging them up for a friend to send to Japan. I think he paid $6K for the pair but sold them to an aquarium store over there for almost double that.

Masked angels are known to be avid skiers - also they enjoy blending in with the snow

And um - I was wondering about that, too

Actually at the time I was working in Atlanta but does it really matter where it was? Either way, in person I thought the female was the more attractive of the two; the orange on the male was not as vivid as you see in most pictures.

Of all the rare,

and not so rare angel, which is the easiest to get as a mated pair, or just a pair? I working on creating CHAOS with a all Angel tank, or at least give it a shot. I would love to have a small harem of Centropyge Boylei, but I know that's not going to happens anytime soon, if ever. And with RCT not selling, it's getting harder to get a lot of rare angels in pairs.

So what would be the easiest and where can I get them?

most angels are found in harems. I know Bandits are found in singles or mated pairs. But a mated pair of bandits is hard to get and very pricey.

I have been able to get most of the Genicanthus Angels in pairs and when I have seen Personatus for sale over the years they have usually been offered in pairs.
You can usually get two angels in any of the larger genus (one smaller than the other) and try and get them to pair up. I bought a small and med sized meredithi and they spend all day hanging out together in the tank. Centropyge Angels can also be paired up on occasion but I have found this to be a little bit more difficult to do compared to larger angels.
Pairing the fish up yourself may not result in them becoming a "mated pair" but they may become a "bonded pair" and since you plan on having multiple fish in one tank, the latter should suffice. If you have your heart set on mated pairs and plan on trying to breed them you will find that obtaining a newly collected mated pair is going to be very expensive and expect to wait a while.

I would think that the easiest centropyge angelfish to pair for certain would be those which have strong sexual dimorphism such as the interruptus and the keyhole angel.

I find that the centropyge are more inclined to fight as they get older.

I've got my chiller and ASM G-3 for my 40 gallon long (48"). I'm planning for a nice refugium and lots of TBS liverock. Could I get by with a Cherubfish trio?

It's much easier to say what there is than what they're isn't... While not in Colorado, there are privately owned personatus out there in the states...
