Marc, thank you so much for putting the maxi-jet mods on your website. I did that to my two 1200's and its like the flow amount doubled.

Today I stopped by one LFS and found that no-one had claimed the free seahorse fry that they offered yesterday. I was really surprised, so I took them home.

Unfortunately I don't have any BBS ready, but will by tomorrow. If they can hang in there, that would be good. I'd say 50% have died though.

This is just a quicky project that was lying around unused, so I stuck a bottom on it, and a small lid (not pictured) in the center to stop the salt spray. It holds about .8 of a gallon, and I put some macro in there so they could seek some tiny food on the plants for now. Several have hitched on it, others are swimming at the surface, and many are on the floor of the container. It is 18" x 2" x 8". 8) No heater is necessary since it is in the fish room at a constant 78F.

Suggestions are always good. The airstone is to keep some circulation, and the macro algae is acting like baffles to keep the bubbles semi-contained in a chimney-type layout.

Very cool. Where do the fry come from? Are they captive raised?

The LFS had a new one come in. I think they are from ORA. It immediately released a ton of babies the very next day. I don't know if I can keep them alive, but they were going to die if no-one did a thing. When I got there, they were in a specimen container and had been there all day. No air, no flow, no food...

Everything is a learning experience. Even if I fail at this event, it prepares me for a future opportunity if better conditions prevail.

The LFS posted a day ago that anyone could come get the babies, and I assumed they were long gone. I didn't have any newly hatched baby brine shrimp going, so I didn't bother pursuing it. However, now that I have them here, a new batch is bubbling away and will be ready tomorrow if any are still alive. Tomorrow I'll have to siphon out the obviously dead ones.

Yeah, I need to fix that typo. Thanks.

I have no idea. I do know that I can easily pollute the water by adding more and more food. It is .8 of a gallon of water.

I would imagine they are pretty hungry. What if you did fed a little bit and did an immediate water change? I don't know anything about raising sea horses, though.

Yeah, if it was a food they'd eat for sure. The oyster eggs are supposed to be small enough for SPS polyps to eat, so I hoped the fry would snick on those. Snick is a term I found in the seahorse forum.

Hmmmm, I think I am gonna go snick me some breakfast.

I suppose you do have to be careful with such little water. Especially with how strong those GP's are. I'm guessing the oyster eggs are probably pretty potent too.

re bulkhead issues

it is hard to not worry about something once you id an issue.

i vote your plan to do something to minimize risk.

and i think i like the one box idea which the weight could be partially supported from below - something screwed to your existing stand just to take the weight edge off - it would offer yet another haven for this and that and should be a fairly easy build - for you.

They have live food available to them, but I don't know if they'll make it. Since they all hang out at the surface, the only baby brine shrimp they can eat have to be up there with them. I really don't know if this will work out, but I didn't get them until they'd been without food for well over a day.

Thanks Nick. I was thinking the same thing. I don't know what I'm going to do about it, but I wanted to float the idea out there to see what others thought.

Marc, turn off whatever light that is on the side of the little tank. Put a light source at the top of the container and the brine will swim right up to the top of the water.

Actually that isn't good advice Travis, although it sounds logical.

You want the seahorses to eat the food away from the surface of the water, so by placing the light low, the food goes to the bottom of the tank and the fry can eat without injesting air.

Just an idea I figured I would throw out on the table. Obviously, I know nothing about seahorses though.
