Our new RS180 arrived this week! (the 250 was too darn big for the sump).
After cleaning it and a little break in time in the bath tub I finally got it in the sump.
Man was that thing LOUD!
So I called ER and spoke with Tech Support, we went over a couple things. And decided I have a funky impeller.
So I gave them the serial numbers, and they are sending me a new impeller!

While I'm bummed about not having the skimmer in our new tank, I am really happy with the support I received from ER!

Yeah, they have been great to me as well. I've had some trouble with my RS100 and i'm sending in the pump to them next week to look at. I don't mind paying a little more for equipment if it means I get good customer service. That goes a long way. I can't wait to get it back and fire it up. I have a good feeling about it.

FB,

The noise isn't coming from the air line, it's coming from the pump. I'm going to talk with tech support at EuroReef and see what they want me to do. I'm running another skimmer on the tank right now along with the new RS-80, so if they need to send me a new impeller or take a look at my pump, that's no problem for me. With others having pump-related issues, it's reassuring to know ER will do whatever they can to make me happy. :-)

Yeah I don't mind sending mine back. I think sometimes people freak out at the idea of running without a skimmer for a week but my tank is not on the brink of callapse. So I should be fine. The key is a patient relaxed attitude and you'll get what you need in the same amount of time. The difference is a lot less stress. Sorry to hear about the noise. I figured it was the air intake.

I've posted here before that my RC-500 dual EuroReef SP4 pumps sound like popcorn machine with the sound of air being chopped up inside them. It can be heard in the next room with doors closed.

My neighbor has the same skimmer and it only occasionally sounded as loud as mine. He has since switched to dual Ehiems and the skimmer is nearly silent now.

Joe-
I think that I have the same problem as you do. The noise my gen-x is making isn't vibration on the sump but it's the pump itself. Unfortunately ER have closed down for the holidays. I'll have to call them on Tuesday to see what can be done.

Got my replacement impellers from ER today, these are the new impellers (black needle wheel) for the dual SP4 pumps I have on the RC-500 skimmer.

As others have reported they draw in significantly more air. Within minutes the skimmer was overflowing using my previous water level. I had to adjust the gate valve about 8 turns to stop it from overflowing.

One of the pumps seems to be having a problem now. It sounds as if it runs dry. It starts to squeal very loud. Simply pinching the air hose for a few seconds solves the problem and the pump returns to normal. Somewhere around 20 to 45 minutes later it does it again.

In addition they gave me a thicker o-ring for the bayonet fitting which is supposed to make it easier to get on and off. It's thick enough that it is a very slight turn to get a snug fit.

Does anyone know the price difference between the SP4 (Gen-x) and the SPE5 (eheim)?

My LFS has that skimmer running on their systems. What size tank(s) will that skimmer be connected to?

Currently I have it running on a 180 gal tank. I hope to get into a 400 gal tank or larger in the next few years.

Wow, talk about overkill! You are going to skim the scales right off of your fish!
I have an RS250 on my 180 with a 75G sump and 30G fuge

Hi. Does ER still heavily under-rate their skimmers in their new line? I'm looking at a CS250. My tank is a 155gal display, 75gal fuge, 150 sump (filled with maybe 55-75gal, and a tiny 15gal frag tank.

So max capacity of 300gal water but that doesn't factor in displacement of sand, rock, etc.

I'd be replacing an ASM G5 which is way overkill. I was aiming at a G4X but the store ended up giving me a G5 in its place (long story).

So, well, am I better off with the G5 or a CS250 I have a chance to get? The G5 has been finicky --- alternately skimming nothing then overflowing the cup.

But it seems the 1-pump CS250 may not be enough for my system?

What do folks think here? What can a CS250 handle???
