Ah, I see now reefsrus. Not the same situation as mine, so I can't help, sorry.

Welcome Christian. It looks like you have the beginnings of a great reef tank there. I had a problem with hair alge for the first few months, but I added some macro algae and it all disappeared within a week!!

I'll second that- Marco competition is great at eliminating hair- as is RO/DI...

ok here is the deal. When i cut the power to the pump in the 10 gallon, it starts a siphon of its own! So i have the pump sucking water back into the fuge as well as the overflow, it fills up pretty fast.

you have to drill a hole in the return pipe at the level you want your main tank to drain at in order to cut the syphon, thus keeping your lower tank from flooding...

from what I understand, your pump is drawing water into your fuge when there is no power to it. this means that a) your return tube is below the water line and there are no air pockets in the tube, and b) it will keep sucking until the water goes below the return tube. to solve the problem of it draining too much, you should put a hole into the return tube somehow at such a height as to not spray water all over the top of your tank (when pump is on), but still allow air in (when pump is off) while the water level in the main tank remains above the bottom of the return tube (preferably no less than when the pump is on).

lemme show you:

OOOO i see. So drill a hole that still underwater, but just under it. So if the power fails, and a siphon starts, not much water is drained before the hole is exposed to air.

Coool Now i wont drain my tank if the power fails

I'm 14, male. Been into saltwater reefs for a year. I currently have a 46g. bow front reef. It has a 15g. fuge, aquaC ev 120 skimmer, Working on getting a calcium reactor, for light it has 2x175 metal halides and 2x75 watt vho's built into a diy canopy. It is mainly sps and lps coral. I got my parents into reefs about 4 months ago and got them to setup a 75g. reef tank which I maintain.

flatzboy, I have a 46 gallon bowfront too!!!! Do you have any pics? I'd love to see those LPS! I am going to set up my new MH lights in the very near future, but I just need the time to acclimate my corals.

I have a three day weekend!!! I dont go to school tomorrow!!!
Jingles thanks for the info I just flood proofed my fuge. I have tons of creatures and its been up for two days. I never relized how much i had in my cc already ( thats what I put in the fuge).

I only need a light and some pvc... using a tempory uptake tube from an old filter for the return flow....

Which would be better
Regular Mandrin. The one Kayla has(Pyscadelic) (Sp?) or a Red Scooter?

My mandarin!!!!

Actually I think variety is cool, so maybe a Red Scooter would be better. That way we have one of each.

Don't worry, I will...

How do some of you other kids posess such big/elaborate tanks?
My question is is in regards to this: permission.

God, my mom despises reef tanks. I have 6 FW tanks and even 1 SW. I have bred Discus, Checkerboard Cichlids, Tropheus, Apistos, even Leiurus puffers. Yet even after 2+ years of reef-research (and begging), a reef is still "a waste of time and money." Hell, last year she even said I could set up a 55 reef, but, after I had bought it, she made me set it up FW... She mainly hates how much you'll pay for LR. It has finally cost me my Birthday present just for permission for a nano. At least from her, anyways.

You guys with the 55s and 75s with huge sumps and fuges, know that you are luckier then you think you are!
