The Skimmer Comparison Chart
About 6 months ago I was contacted by RC member Straegen and asked if I could Upgrade and Host a Skimmer chart he had put together. He wanted other RC members to benefit from the chart. So over the next few months I added Pictures to the Chart and reformatted the style so as to put it more in line with the controller comparison chart. Then to finish things off RC member jdeick added his expert excel touches and DavidRyder reworked the web page to accommodate the chart.
So now I would like to share with you the work and efforts of all involved, and I would like to specially acknowledge the man who put together the core data, RC member Straegen. Here is the Link for the Skimmer Comparison Chart. http://www.aquariumcontrollers.com/a...p#skimmerchart I hope this make purchasing a protien skimmer a little easier and if you have any questions about all these various models of protien skimmers, possibly Straegen will come by and answer some questions, also there are numerous skimmer experts on RC who I hope will stay close to this thread and offer assistance. As you can imagine with a chart this big there will be some mistakes in the first version so please post anything that you find. |

Nice!
Constructive Criticism - Maybe take the black bar at the top that tells what each column means and put it at the top of each company category. Its kinda annoying to have to jump back up to the top to see what number means what. Just a thought...

You also need to change the rating of the remora pro to a 29g or less ; ) Looks nice and with the proper feedback you will get a nice comparison chart. For the via aqua's the sk200's are recommended at 100g, i'd recommend them for up to a 65g tank. the sk388's are recomended up to a 150g tank. I would suggest a 100g or smaller. Prices for both are 89sk200 and 115 sk388. Thats my start

Thanks Luke33
After a few days and I get enough corrected data, I will go in and fix the problems. |

I'll try and take a look at it more after i get off work. I think it can be a great piece for beginners if done correctly.

I think the octopus hob skimmer bh100/f are higher than 40gallons for actual ratings. Its more like 55gallons, I own a bh100 and I'm getting great skimmate any higher I wouldnt recommend. Theres one reefer who has the bh100 on a 90gallon which is too much but hes getting serious skimmate, so the actual rating should be a 55gallon. And the price of the BH100f is wrong. It cost 141.99 at reefstop average is 150. It also comes with a surface skimming box and pumps in the back chamber.
I don't see the rogue up there. Last edited by FishAreFriends2; 12/10/2007 at 04:55 PM. |

One thing i think would be super helpful would be another field for airdraw. That would be excellent. Because when comparing a skimmer to a skimmer one could pull 40scfh and the other 10scfh and there the same size, shape similar gph pump and whatnot.

Does that involve mods?

This might be complex but it would be REALLY cool to have some kind of rating system. Something lest complex would be "Editor's Choice" where you can give a personal recommendation about a certain skimmers.
Really cool chart!!! Kudos!

Very nice!!
Comments...Where's orca/reeflo, MTC, DAS, or those cone skimmers? I didn't check if the new octo xtreme's are there. Personally I'd like general gallon categories because it's inconvenient to filter it down by 12, 29, 30, 40, 90 etc. etc. i.e. 0-50g 50-100, 100-150, 150-250, 250-400, 400+ edit: I just saw your note on RK3... I'm building my tank now... can you give me a ballpark range or availability date on this? i.e. $250-400? 1st quarter '08 release? etc. Thanks!

Re: Orca skimmer, maybe Straegen can jump in Straegen is the skimmer Brain, I only added eye candy.
Some of the listing eg. 20 gal 60gal etc. are just numbers from the manufactorers website or help manual. We don't want to mess with there numbers unless the company updates there info. Re: RK3 / RKE, it will be out near Feb 08. Quote:

Great job guys. I wish there was a tool like this to aid me when I was looking for skimmer. Just bought skimmer a month back I can recognize the value this sheet brings.

I have only tested 2 skimmers on the whole chart
I doubt you will find anybody on RC that has used more than 6 out of the 120+ skimmers listed, so ratings are not going to be easy. Quote:

Use the Excel version, it is much easier to navigate thanks to JDieck's modifications.

Where did you gather the info from for the actual size rating of the tank?
