I am planning to set up new tank which might not have option to setup a sump for various reasons. I am sure lots of member here have SUMPLESS setups.
Can you please post a picture of your sumpless setup? Also can you please also list size of the tank and also your equipment list if you can. Thanks ![]() |

Hey SMS: I don't have any pictures handy, but I do have a sumpless setup that's been going for over a year now:
45g CPR HOB skimmer heater placed in skimmer 2 Seio 820 PH for flow That being said, I am currently working on getting a sump installed on the 45g. I have a 90g with a sump, and I have found with the sump is much better than without. The extra water volume, place to keep macro algae, bigger skimmer, place to dose, place to put carbon & filter sock if needed, etc are all values a sump brings to the table. I'll probably end up going with a HOB overflow to get the sump installed, since my 45g tank is not drilled and I don't want to tear it down just to get a sump installed. hth, rob |

Nice tank Paul! You have any new photos of your Moorish Idol(s)? Also, what kind of skimmer do you use? That's a pretty sweet setup and sumpless to boot!

I used to have a sump but can't go back to them.. I love being sumpless!
Here is an older pic of my tank (I have made some minor changes... will have to get some pics soon) As for my list of equipment... and some possible changes... Tank: All-Glass 40Br Stand: All-Glass Standard Black Canopy: DIY Trapezoid w/ Temp legs.. supposedly. Main Lighting: 1 x 250 watt 14K Hamilton SE Halide Actinics: 2 x 39 watt HO T5's (Blue plus and Actinic) Filtration & Biologies: - Sand: About 40 lbs CaribSea Seaflor Special Grade Reef Sand - Rock: 35-40 lbs Fiji - Skimmer: CPR 2R+ - RO/DI: Aquasafe Canada 100 gpd (DI Resin upgrade) - Water Movement: - AquaClear 110 (500 GPH) - 1 x MJ-900 (On 24/7) - Dosing & Top-off - 20G RO/DI Reservoir - DIY Kalk Reactor (Real Ghetto) - Dosing Pump: Aquamedic SP3000 - Chemicals: SeaChem Reef Iodide & B-Ionic (Random) - Misc: - Rid-Volt Grounding Probe - Thermometer: Coralife Digital - Heater: 1 x 150 watt Ebo-Jaguer (In AC 110) - TDS Meter: DM Dual inline - Mini Mag-Float for Glass - Salt: Instant Ocean - Routines: - Mag-Float: Once/day - Water Change: 5G/week - Reef Iodide: Random (Usually Once/week) - B-Ionic: Random (Usually Twice/week) - Kent Magnesium: Random (Usually Once/month) Things I may change: - Water Movement: I am thinking about getting the smallest of the Tunze Nano Streams to replace the MJ-900. I would only need one and it's smaller than the MJ-900, and of course it pushes a lot of water at ease. Though it's a bit pricey I think it will definitely be worth it. I am not going to get a controller when it comes out... think letting it be on 24/7 will be fine. - Kalk Reactor: I am thinking about building or buying a better Kalk Reactor. Mine is relying on the incoming of water pushed by the SP 3000 for mixing the solution and I am thinking it is just not good enough. It's either that or just mix the Kalk (Not having the Reactor anymore) in the reservoir and refill/remix a new batch when it runs out... we'll see. - Carbon: I randomly run carbon here and there on my tank. I am thinking about being more consistent and running carbon 24/7 since I have a Phosban Reactor just sitting around. It would reassue that the Toxins made by the nastier soft corals are being filtered out plus with my water being even cleaer than it is the light penetration would be better... even with my halide at 14 inches off the water and my actinics at 14 inches! It was sumpless, skimmerless, UV-Less, Ca Reactor-less, refugium-less, etc. I never had a problem with it before. There were detectable nitrates, though. Now, it has a refugium, but I'm still "equipment"-less. I believe in natural filtration

Here's my 54 corner. I'm going to pull most of the hard corals from here soon. It's getting way too crowded. And the Walmart fan goes too

I have been sumpless for 4 months. I do have about 3 inches in the back of my 30 gallon oceanic cube that I used black acrylic to make an overflow, It hides pumps and heaters and my SCWD nicely. I dont dose or skim, I heavily rely on 10% water changes weekly. I also use a very small HOB with just filter floss that I change once a week, it keeps the water very clear and nitrate free.
Here is a pic of my 30 gallon cube in june (you can see the overflow) ![]() and here it is in august ![]() |

Are there any advantages to having a sumpless system? I find it annoying to have so much stuff in the tank. I like what you've done Matt with the 30G with putting everything behind the false overflow. Great idea! Any reasons why you have remained sumpless?

Love the "fireplace reef" ... that's some creative tank placement there, and really makes the room seem quite nice!

Nice setup guys... One question, for HOB skimmer, if collection cup overflows, does it drain back in the tank or it goes on the floor?

My HOB routes any overflow back into the skimmer body, not on the floor.
