How much are they worth?

5" Rhinopius Aphanes

Looks cool but that sure is a lot of money for a fish.

I heard that some people are getting them for $80. Is that true? Are they not that rare anymore?

I would say $80 is a hell of a deal for that fish. If you can get em for anything under $150 i would buy em.... that is if you want them. Let us know.

well, the store here has it for $600 and everyone is complaining that it's too high. The other one to it's right was only $300 and they complain about that too. Oh well.

They are still very rare; but they are going down in price because they are becoming less uncommon.

I see drab brown ones at my LFS for $200-$250. I have seen 3 in the past year or so. I don't think that any would go for $80.

I will say tho that they are one of those fishes naturally don't have a large population. I would not buy one unless you can offer it the very best captive care because of the naturally low numbers.

I have one in a reef. I got this one very small, only a few inches, about a year ago. I got it for $250, but who knows what the pricess will do in the future. They were > $1200 two years ago and could easily go back that high if they only found a small area where they are/were plentiful. I have no idea what they go for now, but try to get the smallest available. They are not known to live very long, so the smaller you can get them the better off you will be. They will eat anything they can possibly get in their mouth. Mine has probably eaten $200 to $300 of fish (not feeders)! They also can be very expensive to feed. I have been unable to get mine on frozen.

This i probably not possible....but hell i'll ask anyway. Has anyone ever bred these in captivity or are they always wild caught? For $1000-1200 a piece i would think that if it was possible more people would have gave it shot?

I've thought about trying, but I haven't found any information on a successful breeding and raising of fry. I like these fish a lot. I'd like to find some less common fish to try to breed, clowns and cardinals just don't interest me much.

Clowns, cardinals, and dottybacks are an exception in that their fry are actually pretty big. Most other fish have tiny, tiny fry that can't even take rotifers - breeding these types of fish is going to be extremely challenging (although the success with some dwarf angel species offer some hope).
