Are you sure there is a bubble behind the eye, or is the eye just swollen? Swollen eyes are often caused by bacterial infections, especially if the eye has been injured. If your water conditions are good and the fish is feeding well, it will probably clear up on its own. A large water change may help.

If it doesn't clear up, you may have to move the fish to a separate tank and treat with antibiotics. Never use medications, especially antibiotics, in the display tank.

Butterflyfish can be quite prone to swollen eyes. I have a Chaetodon kleinii that has had a swollen eye for over 12 months. The fish is still doing fine.

Melissa,

"Gas Bubble Disease" is not common in marine aquariums. It is caused by a supersaturation of gas in the water which is quite difficult to achieve. If you have a lot of algae and insufficient circulation you could end up with a supersaturation of oxygen during the day. Other than that it is very difficult to supersaturate tank water with any gas.
