My first closed loop, I have some questions about flow
Hello,
I just received a used ~120 gal tank (5'x20"x24"h) and it is drilled with five holes. Two 1" holes for the overflow/return which I will be using a AGA Megaflow kit; and three holes in the main tank that were used for a closed loop (two 3/4" returns and one 1" intake). I have never set-up a closed loop and would like some advice. Basically, I would like to know how much flow I should be looking for in the system between the sump return and the closed loop. For instance, how much flow does a single Megaflow overflow kit handle? For the closed loop, what pump size/type should I be looking into. I was thinking of using and OM in the future, should I be plumbing two more returns? Also, I would like to use a large intake strainer but only have seen standard sizes available and am not sure if those will clog up too easily. I am planning more of a mixed reef including sps. I just started to read Julian Sprung's Reef Aquarium Volume 3 but would like your input and experiences. I have bought all of the bulkheads but not sure what to do next. Let me know any advice you may have. Thanks, Rafael |

I could be wrong, but i am pretty sure a single megaflow is good for 600 gph. As for the closed loop, it really depends what kind of flow (turnover) you are looking for. With those size holes I would think ~1200 gph is about it on the allowable flow, any more than that and you will be intake pipe size limited and will cause the pump to cavitate

Yea, it really depends on what you want to keep. As far as pumps foor a CL are concerned Reeflo, Bluline, Velocity are all good in my opinion. If you want to keep alot of SPS I would consider increasing the 1" out hole to 2" and the 3/4" return holes to 1" and go with a Reeflo Hammerhead.
Also keep the flow through the sump to 5x the rank an hour or less

Thanks... That gives me a much better ball park of how to set this up.
