Noisy overflow

I've seen this topic about a dozen times but I cant seem to find any old threads on it.

Anyways, the 1" drain that goes down to my refugium is making a percussion drum of grand gulping glugliness. Any suggestions? The noise is even worse when I put on my strainer.

Does your overflow have a vent pipe? if so you can put a cap on it with a hole in the top to allow for air. This helps balance out the air/water ratio and should help with the gurgling sounds.

I based my overflow on a Durso and it works great.

Unfortunately I made the overflow box as the style that has one box inside the tank, one outside the tank, and a tube connecting the two for a continuous siphon. I do like the example you posted, neat idea.

So I may have some luck if I can adjust the air to water ratio... are there any mtp threaded 1" devices out there to adjust this ratio or do I need to be more ingenious?

Perhaps putting a 90º elbow on the intake will help...

ahh I didn't realise it was of that style. with that style overflow you wouldn't want any air getting into the U-Tube as that could break the siphon.

I am not sure how to quiet that style of overflow.

Last weekend I decided to build a new (secondary) overflow for my tank. if you can not quiet yours down and decide to look at alternatives you might wnat to try this one I just happen to have all the parts lying around the house and it only took about 20 - 30 minutes to build and is unbelieveably quiet.

Another thought I had was to get like a 6" diameter cardboard tube and spiral 1" hose down it, this would give a horizontal element to the flow and perhaps the water wouldnt "fall" as much and make the spashing sounds...

Yeah. You want a durso or stockman on the external box drain. I had a siphon overflow as well and had the gurgle sound. It usually comes with a cylendrical foam prefilter that attaches on the drain. You have to loose that and put a durso or stockman on it. I used a durso, but had to shorten the elbow and tee outlet fitting connection to make it fit. The stockman should fit as designed though.

Try this one. I had the same trouble with my overflow being noisy then I put one of these on and now no noise. This is like the stockman only flipped upside down and works great no more gurgle sound that I got from the stockmandid I mention It works great?

Prefilters are risky. If it clogs with sediment, then you have a flood on your hands.
