Should I have run away...??
I went to dump the ashes from the fire
Then went back a while later to dump the lobster shells Noticed a white tail deer taking off thru the woods, so I stopped Four more were about 30 feet from me, could hardly see them they blended in so well I was downwind...and I think the lobster also masked my smell When they moved behind a tree I crouched down One deer kept looking over towards me At one point ot moved towithin maybe 30' of me It started pawing the ground, snorting AND SCREECHING!! Never knew a deer could make that sound.... So...for future reference, was it warning me? Agressive? At what point do you run... I was trying to think of what was behind me There was a fence, but I'm pretty sure the deer could have closed on me before I could get to the pool fence & over I kept thinking of Funniest Home Videos where that deer thrashes that guy w/its hooves I need to setup a web cam down there |

Being crouched down like that was probably what made them get aggressive. You may have appeared to be a predator getting ready to rush in.
Deer can be quite aggressive, but they generally don't do it unprovoked. In the Funniest Home Video you saw, the guy had been demonstrating a fawn in distress call before they entered then enclosure where the buck attacked them.

You're supposed to strip yourself of clothes and frolic around in front of them singing.

you weren't wearing leopard print were you?
stomping and snorting are hints for you to go away. were you looking right at them? they don't like that if they don't know you. i can get within 10' of mine if i don't "look at them". but i never take my eyes off them for my safety.

http://www.tribune-democrat.com/arch...255231448.html Woman hospitalized after being attacked by buck By KIRK SWAUGER The Tribune-Democrat SHANKSVILLE — An environmental specialist for a Central City engineering firm was attacked by a buck while she was studying wetlands at a game preserve in Stonycreek Township Wednesday morning. Jamie Detweiler, 35, of Ligonier, was flown by medical helicopter to Memorial Medical Center in Johnstown, where her condition was not immediately available. Detweiler was doing wetlands dilineation at the preserve for Musser Engineering when the buck suddenly charged her, goring her in the leg, said Roger Harmon, owner of 6 Springs Hunts on Lambertsville Road in the shadows of the Flight 93 temporary memorial. “This is the first time it’s ever happened up here,” said Harmon, who has operated the preserve for deer, wild boars and rams for the past five years. Randy Musser, president of Musser engineering, said “we’re thankful, thank God” that Detweiler was not maimed even more severely. State Wildlife Conservation Officer Travis Anderson was near the preserve when he heard reports of the attack over the scanner around 10:37 a.m. Why the deer charged remains uncertain: Anderson said buck typically won’t begin their rut for another six weeks or so. The buck remains free on the fenced-in preserve, he added. “Deer inside fences sometimes have a tendency to be more used to human beings than other deer,” Anderson said. The woman was doing wetlands work inside the preserve when confronted by the buck. “Apparently, she saw this deer and started backing away,” Anderson said. “At some point, the deer came after her.” Harmon said the 50 or so deer on the property are not accustomed to human interaction, and usually would run away. “These deer are pretty wild,” he said. “You can’t go up to them. They take off running.” Along with the Game Commission, Shanksville Fire Company, the state police and Somerset ambulance. Christy...
