Can running carbon too often be bad ?
I have a 55g salt water with coral in it.
I use 3 fluval canisters as my form of filtration due to having no room for a sump I do a 10g water change about every 4 days. I like to keep my water as clean as possible. I feed about 3 table spoons of Phyto Feast every water change to keep my corals happy. Can changing/running carbon that often be harmfull to my tank? |

3 table spoons sounds high. How many coral and type of coral?3 canister filters can be bad if you dont clean or have the wrong media. Carbon is fine and should be changed regularly.
Water changes at 10% weekly or bi-weekly or 20% bi-weekly or monthly could be fine, really depends on your readings. Do you know your water readings? Type of fish? Do you have a skimmer? Amount of LR and LS?

In short, my information is probably outdated but I know a lot of people who would agree with me on how to run carbon. Personally I run it for a day or two when I change my Phosban (that way I only need one reactor). I have been wondering lately what the latest thoughts are on this topic, so I am glad you brought it up. |

I clean the pads in my canisters everytime I change my carbon.
I have a bubble tip anemone, Frogspawn, torch coral, Alveopora(banch)coral, anchor coral, a few rocks with mushrooms, pulsing zenia and a few rocks with botton polyps. I currently only have a Long Nose Butterfly and a clown fish that swim freely in my tank I have a Seaclone Protein Skimmer I dont know the amount of LR but I would guess I have about 50lbs of it... My water readings are the following 20 nitrate 0 nitrite 8.0ph 240 alkalinity |

i dont see where you say how much or how often you change carbon.
FWIW im a big fan of GAC. i use a lot of it and change it every 4 weeks or so. IMO the only thing you need to worry about is waiting too long between changes. if you do you will clear the water too quickly and your corals might get light shocked. ive never seen any proof of GAC excessively removing trace elements.

High nitrate could be from low flow, any bio balls , water source like tap,not enough CUC , poor SB condition.
DO any of these apply?

Thanks guys... Great info...
I tend to change my carbon about 3 to 4 weeks.... I dont have any bio balls because I dont have room for a sump.. i have canisters for filters... I am fighting a green hair algae breakout that started in my tank about a month ago.. I only use ocean water that is sold at my local fish store... i dont use tap.. I'm new to this online community.. What exactly is FWIW ? GAC? CUC ? SB ? |

CUC is cleanup crew.SB is sand bed.
Whats for flow or water movement? Do you know your water readings?

The canister filter will not be helping your HA. Do you have media inside it.

now I know what cuc means.
I run carbon also, I think it does a great job of keeping the water clear, so long as you change it regularly (which you do), otherwise it can be a nitrate trap. |

Change your carbon every 3-4 DAYS, not weeks: if carbon stays in too long, it starts releasing everything it sucked up....nasty trait of carbon.
Also probably not necessary if you're not running softie corals or way many fish.
