leaking bulkheads

It seams that all four of my bulkheads are leaking.. Did i do something wrong???
I was so excited to start putting water into my tank that i forgot to clean the inside the over flows. I thinkn some sand or somthing is keeping it from getting water tight. Ive got them on so tight that now i cant get them off.(my luck)
should i use some cocking? any other ideas?
