Thailand Local Fish Stores - pics
I took a short vacation trip in Thailand two weeks ago and am in love w/ their lfs Many thanks to Chingchai for showing me some of the nicest LFS in Bangkok and especially his amazing tank ( I just posted some pics of his tanks on page #16 of his tank thread:
http://archive.reefcentral.com/forum...78#post9696078 The lfs there are smaller in sizes compared to the US lfs but they specialize in different types of goods and livestocks - some stores sell only equipment, some FW fish or SW fish only, and some mostly LPS/SPS only, etc... One impression I got from the reef stores is that the corals there are so bright and vivid in color - properly due to the short transportation from Indonesia to Thailand as compared to the US - so less tressful for corals. There are more large size colonies (even the cultured stuffs also larger and brighter). And most of the stores use braceless tanks which are NICE and the tanks are super clean as compared to some tanks at my LFS in Houston! Last edited by fishcraze2002; 04/10/2007 at 10:17 PM. |

Nice pics and tank. Is his tank acrylic? It looks like at least an inch thick rimless?

Now let's see some pics
1/ The 'street stores' - these are vendors that sell fishes (mostly FW) right on the street in the Bangkok weekend flee market. The fishes are already in bags 2/ The freshwater stores: I saw some of the most beautiful cichlics in their FW stores that made me want to set up a FW tank again! Love the red cichlics in these pics below: |

I love Thailand, two of the best trips I've taken...the Peninsula Hotel in Bangkok is worth the plane trip alone... Great shots, thanks for sharing!

Hi ,
How are the prices compared to us? What would the pink mille cost? Thanks, Frank |

The coral prices were quite high - about the same prices as in the US or even higher - but better color tho. The pink mille colony is about $100 or more i think. I was surprised about the high prices there where you could get a good noodle soup bowl for less than $1 and parasailing for only $15 But the lfs told me that most of the corals are imported and hard corals are illegal to keep in Thailand so they had to pay lot 'extra' money to get those corals past the Thailand custom and hence the high prices.
Some of more common zoos - which are legal - are sold for ~$30-60 for 4"-6" rocks ==> pretty much the same price as in the US. The red mushrooms are also expensive! |

4/ Reef store #2: This one is awesome with lots of bright color corals. My reaction when seeing the coral in their main coral tank was WOW WOW - the pics don't do these corals a justice at all! I've never seen so much bright color corals in one single fish store (even the online ones) at one time like this before!
This braceless tank is about 8 or 10 ft long but the glass doesn't look thick to me at all This brain coral has blue marks around the rim - very nice but it's ~US$180! This staghorn looks awesome in person - lime green w/ purple tips |

Wow what a trip! You are lucky to have seen all this. I love the store layout, very nice tanks. Awesome stuff, I hope to see more pictures from you. You are right the LFS in our area are also pretty ghetto, I have seen stores in Florida that were very immaculate and these look even better yet!

Lots of nice green clove polyps These anemones are amazing: I thought this was an anemone but they said it's a rare mushroom and it's ~$300 or $500 something! The anemone and gorgonian tank This yellow anemone also nice: Last edited by fishcraze2002; 04/12/2007 at 10:53 PM. |
