Detritus on live rock
?I was just finishing up a water change on my tank and noticed a good amount of detritus building up in the crevices of my rock. It is a fairly new tank so I am still dealing with algae out breaks. should I take the rock out of the tank and shake off the detritus in made up saltwater? I was thinking about re-aquascaping the tank to elimate dead spots now that I have my new powerheads. I could shake off the rocks then. What do you think?
Thanks, - Rick |

Use a turkey baster or a small powerhead to blow it off the rocks then siphon it out. You can siphon it through a filter sock and dont have to do a water change.

not to sound like a complete jack *** but I assume I would put the filter soc in the sump and run the siphon through that correct?

I've actually foudn you will get a crapload of detritus out of nearly every crevice and such by taking a new stiff bristle toothbrush (I use a colgate 360) and giving a few quick swipes over the rock. The amount of detritus and crap in their is amazing. My toothbrush is now my 2nd favorite aquarium cleaning tool (after my turkey baster )

Turkey baster works well for me, but the filter sock in the sump sounds like an even better Idea!

Yeah then you arent taking any water out of the tank. Good for me, a guy with no rodi unit in the house. I like the idea of the tooth brush too.

I powerhead should do the trick fairly well. But I might try a toothbrush as well now.
