Is this damage from the manufacturer or shipping Co?
Right side of my tank with the leaking overflow...
http://img385.imageshack.us/my.php?i...11050013un.jpg ![]() here is a close up of the right side/ overflow damage... http://img345.imageshack.us/my.php?i...07050054zt.jpg ![]() I recieved my 96x24x24 acrylic tank with damages on it... this is one of the overflows positioned in the rear corner of the tank. What does it look like to you poor craftmanship or Freight Co. damage, and yes i told the manufacturer and am curently deciding to get another tank from him or get a new one from someone else... Click on the pic for a bigger view. You can see the bonging material(the line and bubbles) just to the left of the Black acrylic. Last edited by Bebo77; 09/11/2005 at 10:52 PM. |

Clarify what exactly we are looking at again? I know something is wrong with the overflow, but what?

This is a pic of the rear right overflow seam. You are looking at it from one of the 24 in sides looking in at the tank. Overflow is on the right side.. tank is on the left.

It is impossible to tell what we are looking at to be honest with you. I am guessing that is a crack? There is so much reflection and odd ball lighting that it is hard to even tell what it is. Also looks like there is water in the thing? *a puddle?

sorry about the quality. if you click on it and get a bigger shot you can see the bonding materal all over the place. I was wondering if this is common on tanks? i have a little 60 gallon now and i see no bonding compound anywhere. On this overflow it is everywhere...

Is the tank glass or acrylic? Looks like bubbles in the seam or silicone sealant? Explain more what you think the damage is.

Bebo77, even the larger photo is hard to tell what you are looking for.
I would try to resolve the problem with the manufacturer. If it does not affect the operation or functionality of the tank, maybe they will refund a portion of the price instead of a replacement.

its 1/2 acrylic the area should in my opinion be perfectly clear but i have this.. bonding agent spewing out. i think they put the overflow box in place and then moved it 1/8 inch back and smeared it.. but thats my opinion..i have never made an acrlyic tank before.

if the tank was done professionally, then I would expect to see no bonding agent smeared outside the seam. The stuff is "wicked" in to start with so should not have been outside the seam in the first place. Do a search and find the "Acrylic" thread and maybe on of the experts there can be more specific as to what to do.
on second thought, here is the thread I follow there: http://archive.reefcentral.com/forum...13#post5686013

I thing i would just get some silicone and fix it and stop whining! Why send a tank back to the manufacturer if the only thing wrong is sealent on the overflow. Not trying to be mean but to me it just seems a little, well, stuck up, but i can also see your point since you paid for a well manufactured tank but still. This isn't like an outer seam from what i seen in the pics its just 2 little spots on the overflow not sealed correctly!
Oh to answer your question though, it looks like bad manufacturing not shipping damage.

Oh and the weird lighting they are talking about is the glare showing us your vertical blinds and your car outside.

I do not think i am being stuck up at all. I paid good money for a quality tank that i don't think i recieved. Where do i draw the line exterior leaks as opposed to interior? Why would i want to go and fix someone elses mistake. I want to know in peoples opinion if this damage was caused by the maker or the freight co. I am the one who will be looking at it every day for the next (who knows how many years) and i want one to be proud of it. If this is the work i can expect from them then i will take my business elsewhere.
and its my garage door and a car on the street oustide my driveway. |

Definitly looks like poor crafsmanship if you ask me. Looks like they were in a hurry to glue the overflow or it moved on them in the prosses. Send it back.

I wasn't attacking you! I was just looking at it as to what would be the easiest fix. I also had a bad day sorry.

I also agree, poor craftsmanship. I'd be getting a return authorization from them too. They should be picking it up and you should receive full credit. Shoddy workmanship IMO.

lol no worries modem.. i was looking forward for this tank for 3 months.. first the overflows were built in the wrong place, had to wait for him to build another one... then he ran out of material and i had to wait for his arcylic order to come in.. then when i get this tank its not what i expected.. you should see the sump i got... almost broken in half!!!! but thats another story.

Yeah but if you send it back won't you have to wait through all that again? Better yet, can you stand to wait through all that again?

That looks like a mfr problem. I am assuming the damage is only on the inside of the tank.

Yes only on this overflow. There are other defects/damages which i believe were caused by the shipping co, but this.. i wanted to get peoples opinion, manufacturer is claiming it was shipping damage.

While you can add me to the list of people that can't tell much from the pic, it certainly doesn't look right whatever it is.
But with that said, if it bothers you this much now, it's going to continue bothering you each and every time you walk by. Nothing worse than being stuck with something that shouldn't have even happened in the first place and then having to keep looking at it as time goes by. Send it back. Brett

tanks are too expensive, otherwise we would all have 1k gallon tanks. I'm sure you paid well for this tank, if it was delivered in this condition, I would send it back. Not worth any future hassles in my opinion. Explain to them that you are on one of the biggest forums for sw tanks there is, and pics are being posted on the quality of their tank. Also explain to them that pics WILL be posted on the replacement tank....then sit back...watch em scramble for you
