Question on how to frag encrusting monti

I am getting ready to frag a rainbow monti for a friend of mine.
It is encrusted on a rock at least an inch thick, & it is starting to grow over the edge by an eighth of an inch. Will it snap off the rock , or do I have to cut through the thickness of the rock to get a frag ( I hope not).
I am hoping I can cut through the coral with a dremel & it will pop off with a little prodding.
This is a rare coral that is growing fast in my tank, so I dont want to screw it up.
Any help is greatly appreciated.
Thanks, Matt

It may not pop off the rock as you would think. I say, either let it grow for a while over the edge and than snap that piece off. Ifou must do it now. Use the dremel and than dremel underneath it on the rock itself. Monti's are very hardy, and the encrusting ones really stick to that rock man. GL!

I dunno about `popping it off' ... but don't claim to know or have seen everything, nowhere near.

I've used the chisel + hammer method in the past. [take chisel, position where you'd like it to split, hit chisel with hammer to make two pieces of rock/coral]. Not really precise or `optimal' ... suppose a dremel would yield a more regular cut. Perhaps use a dremel to slice the back where you'd like to break it - and then break from there?

Hammer/chisel has worked both times I've tried it, though it took some guts the first time

i have cut right through LR with nothing mroe than a kitchen knife idk if its just my rock (Fiji and Carribean) that is not dense or what
but if i were you i would try and cut through the monti and the rock or put a small rock next to it let it encrust that rock and the break the 2 rocks apart and then u have a frag

I use the trusty ole Dremel to cut frags off my encrusting monti's. This is more precise, and, IMO a little safer...

I just use the thin cut-off wheel.

For this sort - the diamond cutting wheel.
For LPS, the side-cutting bit.
