meta halide ??s

I have 2 400w MH over my tank, a 225gal tall, 6 ft long. The tank has a canopy on it so we have raised the canopy a bit and the lights sit about 8 in above the water. Is it a problem to have the lights that close to the water. I have no other way so far of mounting them. Should I start looking? Plus I have them mounted lengthwise, I have heard I will get better use of them to mount them front to back, any feedback??

PEOPLE MOUNT THEM FRONT TO BACK...BUT MY LIGHTS ARE SIDE TO SIDE, (3X 400 WATT MH) WITH THE REFLECTOR SPREAD OUT. THIS GIVES ME GREAT COVERAGE WITH NO DEAD SPOTS. EVEN THE EXPENSIVE ALL IN ONE HOODS HAVE THE LIGHTS SIDE BY SIDE...ALSO 8 INCHES FROM THE WATER IS QUITE LOW. YOU ARE GOING TO NEED BIG FANS SOLD AT RADIO SHACK, TO DRAW AIR OUT..
IN MY OPINION...

My halides are about 5 inches off the water in the same orientation as you. Have have several fan and all is well. My Montipora Digitata is less than 7 inches from a 250W halide with no issues. When I need to acclimate something I do raise my lights to about a foot off the water.

THEKIDSTA1 I THINK YOUR CAPSLOCK IS STUCK ON.
