Doggydog911,
I have made 2 threads that show the complete instructions for 2 very similar skimmers. Do a search for "eap skimmer picture guide" for the first and "you asked for it" for the 2nd. |

i know some people used a mj 1200 for this. cant read the whole thread so ill just ask my questions. what size pvc to make the venturi and what size airline fitting/airline work best with the 1200. is the 1200 too underpowered for those size containers. what about on a smaller version with smaller containers?

Did anyone get this to work with the 802 powerhead? I'm trying now and can't get it to pull any air. I've boiled this pvc tee about a zillion times trying to get the right amount of squishedness, and I can't get it to work. I'm thinking I might just need a bigger pump afterall.
Thanks, Nicole |

I've tried to make my own one of these types of skimmers using the two rubbermaid containers and some PVC fittings. It seems to physically function great -- especially to clear up sand storms in my tank. However, the "skimate" never smells anything other than mildewy -- not a strong odor like I've seen before. Here is a pic of my skimmer bubbling:
And here is a pic of the top part out of the water: My nitrates are pretty close to zero with or without the skimmer. I figure my macro-algae is bearing the brunt of that burden. Still, I would like to get the skimmer going. What could be my problem? Bubbles not small enough? Tube to long into the water? Not high enough? I've tried the 2" riser tube flush with the fitting and where it is now). I gotta be missing something basic here. Can you help me? |

BTW, I use a Mag 5 intake pump and a squished 3/4" tee as a venturi.

does this look right for the venturi?

if anyone still sees this... can i get away with a ocean runner 2700 like the gsm setup, have the OR feed the water into the skimmer w/ a venturi that has a 3/4" in/out and use also a 3/4" output on the skimmer w/ 3/4" gate valve, or do i need a 1" gate valve on the skimmer output? reason being, 1" gates are expensive and only found online, i have a 1/2 and 3/4" gate valve already here.

The "T" looks good
i don't see any reason why the 3/4" valve wouldn't work. |

A valve would work, the T would work, but all of the above is a bit more expensive than many alternatives.
The valve idea is definitely adjustable and not a bad idea at all. I just screwed on a "chopped off" barbed fitting with a hole drilled for the air line. It has been working excellent so far for about a month now. It's just a $00.50 1" barbed fitting. If you want more restriciton - use a smaller barb. It's not that adjustable unless you consider shoving the hose deeper into the barb deeper adjustable. |

I like that idea.

Does this skimmer require alot of tweaking and maintenance on a constant basis?
