Looking for a QUIET pump!!!!! Help please!!!
I have a 75 gallon tank, and I am going to be downsizing in order to get the "wife's approval" for living room location!!!!!
I am going to probably be going with a 50 gallon cube. I currently have an Eheim 6051 I think(around 700 gph) and while this is an extremely quiet submersible pump, I was think of maybe using an external pump like a Panworld or such for even more noise reduction....does anyone have any experience with this? Are external pumps quieter than submersible one's? |

T1 pump...very quiet, but runs hot.

Submersible pump noise if further quieted by being underwater. For a 50g cube, I would go with Eheim 1250 as the return pump. The 1250 is dead silent.

Sorry, the Eheim 1250 is what I have.....I was getting confused with my tunze nano's!
So the ehiem that I have IS probably as queit as I am going to get? |

If you're not familiar with external pumps, the Panworld pumps really aren't as quiet as you might think unless you mod them by taking off the stock fan and replacing it with a computer fan. When I made the switch to externals, I was actually dissappointed at first. But after doing that mod, I'm pleased with the noise level.
Also, what Killereef said is true- the Poseidon/Velocity pumps really do run dead silent, but again they get pretty toasty and I'm not sure if I'd want to put one on a tank that small.

It would be difficult to get a quieter pump than a 1250. BTW, its only 317 GPH @ 0'. External pumps are often air cooled and have a fan which obviously makes noise. Some are water cooled, and are quieter, but add heat (as does a submersible).
