H&S 300-3x1260 Protein Skimmer

good skimmer? or should I spend double the price and get a Deltec.

Display will be 500-600 gals. Not sure about sump and refugium sizes yet.

Advantages/Disadvantages?

I have the same model but with 3 Aquabee pumps instead of the eheim and I could not be happier, excellent skimmer in my opinion. My total system is roughly 425 gallons, which this skimmer handles with ease. I upgraded from a Euro-Reef and there is a noticeable difference in quality. H&S do not skimp on their skimmer builds, they are solid. As for performance, they are almost identical to the Deltec, no real difference there.

If you had the space and the height, I think the H&S A250 will do it for you. But then the H&S 300-3x1260 is a nice unit too.

I would also recommend you look into the euro-reef RC500.

$1500 for a 3 eheim 12" body. Its a steal.

And as far as build quality goes, I've owned both an ER and H&S. The ER "RC models" are built better. Its thicker, and the cast they use for reason seem to be a little bit clearer. The only difference is the way the pumps mount to the body. H&S pvc welds the unions to the body, ER uses uniseals. They use the same pvc welds on both skimmers to hold the body and cup together.

H&S are great skimmers. I have owned them in the past, and would buy another.

However, for the 3 pumps models, you can get an ER $1500 as opposed to the $2100 that H&S commands for the "exact" same skimmer. The ONLY difference is the uniseals. Oh yeah, the ER also comes with a drain on the body. A very handy feature for RC skimmers.

I've owned smaller H&S skimmers and found that they are very high quality.
Have you seen the new sequence skimmer? Might be worth a look:

If you're low on budget I would go with the octopus FDNW-300 for $699.

Sequence all the way.........cheaper than the RC500 and can handle a bigger water volume. The RC500 is rated for 500+ on an average load tank(probably closer to 600g), whereas the Sequence is rated for a heavy load at 600g.

The air draw between the two is about the same, but the sequnce takes up i think 60 extra watts.

Its a toss up.......I don't think you could go wrong with either.

I agree with Jim. Of the 3 ER/H&S/Deltec 12" 3 Eheim skimmers, the ER is a real bargain in that category if you can get a good price on one. I'm not sure who sells it for $1500. I checked 3 popular RC vendors and saw $1668, $1999 and $2198 for the RC500. Quite a spread in prices.

I can only talk about H&S and I would have to say they are the best skimmer I have ever had but then I had "POS's"(ASM, Corallife, Bubblemaster) prior to getting my H&S. The main advantage I have found about the H&S and externals in general is that they are not affected by sump level and are plug and play, set it and forget it no tweaking involved. Unlike my old BM250 which I sold because it overflowed more then my 2year old nephew and needed constant attention also like my nephew. The H&S's I have are just clean the collection cup and just let it suck the poop from the fishes, I have lots of Fairy wrasses and Anthias so I feed a lot and often and both skimmers keep up with no hiccups or belches.

Taking thread back to the original question, advantages/disadvantages between H&S and Deltec:
1. Warranty: H&S 2 years / Deltec 1 year
2. Construction: H&S uses thicker acrylic and the quality of the acrylic used looks better/clearer
3. Cost of replacement pumps: H&S $299 / Deltec $550

I've been using different ER skimmers on several tanks for the last 7 years and love their skimmers. But my most recent purchase of my new H&S skimmer, it's got to be the best skimmer I've every bought and use. Skims consistently, no fuss and a true set it and forget it skimmer.
