My question is this. I want to add mushrooms as well. How high from the tank should I place my lights. It is presently about 12" from the surface and the bulbs are running off workhorse ballasts.

What brand of reflectors are you using? If you are using Tek reflectors that is a TON of light and I wouldn't even think about shrooms. You could drop down to six lamps and drop the lamps down to six inches above the water and have a net gain in light at the bottom of the tank.
