Jake, from what I've read, it's darn near impossible to sex them until the male has carried, then you can "mark" him as a male through his individual marking/s.
I was shocked that ~700,000 of this fish were bought in the 2000-2001 time period. That number has got to make a dent on the reef population and the food chain balance.
