I understand your frustration with the LFS. Most of the stores I frequent have a return policy of 48 hours with a large sample of your tank water. They won't give you money or credit for the fish without that sample either, which is good and for their own protection. Why the LFS that you went to refuses to back up their stock in ANY way is beyond me.
But, what I don't understand is why you bought the fish in the first place if you had doubts about it. That is exactly why it's great to be able to see and watch the fish before you buy it.
Then again, I don't understand why you would put a newly purchased fish in the main tank. A quarantine tank would have let you observe the fish on the next day and return it or treat it if you noticed the fish having problems.
As far as buying over the net and having the "arrive alive guarantee"- I don't see how that would have helped you? The fish did, after all, arrive at your house alive......
