I've actually foudn you will get a crapload of detritus out of nearly every crevice and such by taking a new stiff bristle toothbrush (I use a colgate 360) and giving a few quick swipes over the rock. The amount of detritus and crap in their is amazing. My toothbrush is now my 2nd favorite aquarium cleaning tool (after my turkey baster
