Some ballast won't work if you take a lamp off line. It will sense an interuption and shut down or continue to pulse till it reactivates the lamp.

I have a four lamp. It don't get hot and i use a splash guard. Scotmc is right about the lamps getting hot and loosing life. I just prefer to clean the acrylic instead of cleaning everything...
