Yes, I would recommend putting some cover over...
Yes, I would recommend putting some cover over the top of the overflow. This keeps the light off that area and no algae will grow.

yeah, MY mag 5 seriously is dismal after 6 months. Its probably getting a good 175 mgh after 4 feet of head!!! And this is probably the reason for my high ammonia, algae, etc. I'm of to clean it!!!
